MSU Spikers Prepare for 15th Bobcat Classic

MSU will continue its torrid non-conference play when it hosts the 15th Montana State Bobcat Classic, Sept. 13-14 in Shroyer Gym.

MSU will continue its torrid non-conference play when it hosts the 15th Montana State Bobcat Classic, Sept. 13-14 in Shroyer Gym. With the conclusion of Saturday night's match against South Dakota, the Bobcats will have played seven matches in nine days. Participating in the tournament along with MSU will be Gonzaga, Akron and South Dakota. Weekend schedule:
Friday, Sept. 13
South Dakota vs. Akron, 4:30 pm

ABOUT THE BOBCATS:
After dropping all three matches at the Morehead State-Comfort Inn and Suites Invitational last weekend, the Bobcats made the eight-hour bus ride to Provo, Utah to face West Coast Conference power BYU on Tuesday night in Smith Fieldhouse. The Cougars defeated the Bobcats 25-15, 25-19, 25-10. Freshman Kennadie Clute recorded 10 kills to guide MSU, while sophomore middle blocker Natalee Godfrey added seven kills, while notching a .267 attack percentage. In addition, the native of Eugene, Ore., tallied two blocks. Senior libero Nicole Baker led all Bobcats with nine digs, while Kasey Schlatter added seven saves.
THE TOURNAMENT FIELD:
Gonzaga, led by former Montana State head coach Dave Gantt, is currently 2-4 overall with victories over UNLV and Seattle. The Zags are led by Savannah Blinn, who averages 3.77 kills per set, while hitting an impressive .402 from the field. Akron is coming off a 3-0 win over Robert Morris on Tuesday night. The Zips are 5-1 overall, with its lone loss coming to UW-Milwaukee. Akron has been led this season by Alex Cocklin, who is averaging 3.38 kills and 1.86 digs per set. South Dakota is 5-3 overall, with victories over three Big Sky Conference schools - Idaho State, Montana and Eastern Washington. The Coyotes are paced by Kendall Kritenbrink, who is averaging 4.03 kills per set.
FAB FROSH, PART I:
Kennadie Clute, a 6-1 outside hitter from Spokane, continued her hot early season play at the Morehead State Comfort Inn and Suites Tournament, last weekend in Kentucky. Clute averaged 3.73 kills and 2.91 digs per set, while hitting .210 from the floor and adding five blocks and an ace. She was in double-figure kills in all three matches. Clute posted a weekend-high 16 kills against Saint Louis. For her efforts, she was named to her second straight all-tournament team. Clute is currently ranked 1st in the Big Sky Conference in kps (4.07). Tuesday night at BYU, Clute notched a team-high 10 kills, giving her eight straight matches in double-digit kills.
FAB FROSH, PART II:
Freshman Anna Sykora also continued her hot-hand. The 5-11 setter from Rapid City, SD, dished out 95 assists, averaging 8.64 assists per set, last weekend. Sykora's assist average of 10.78 ranks her second among Big Sky Conference setters. She posted a weekend-high 50 assists in MSU's loss to Morehead State. In addition, Sykora posted her third double-double of the season with 50 assists and 13 digs against Morehead State. She has 25 assists at BYU.
FAB FROSH, PART III:
Freshman outside hitter Loni Kreun has posted a strong start to the season. The 6-0 native of Davis, Calif., averaged 2.09 kills and 2.64 digs at the Morehead Tournament. Kreun had her best outing with 15 kills, seven digs and two blocks against Morehead State. At BYU, she tallied eight kills and five digs.
GOOD GODFREY:
Sophomore Natalee Godfrey has put together a solid week for the Bobcats, including averaging 1.91 kills and hitting .304 from the field at the Morehead State Invitational. The native of Eugene, Ore., also posted seven kills and a .267 attack percentage at BYU on Tuesday night.
