For a good chunk of the season, Montana State's doubles play gave the Bobcat women's tennis team a one-point advantage heading into singles action. On Friday in the opening-round of the Big Sky Conference tournament, it was Portland State who captured the opening point, en route to a 4-2 win over the Bobcats.

"Sometimes it just isn't your day," MSU head coach Denise Albrecht said. "We battled and Laura (Middel) and Paulina (Lopez) won at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, which is super."

Portland State (10-6) claimed victories at the bottom of the ladder, winning at Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles. Montana State (9-11) saw its four-match winning streak snapped with the loss.

"I wish we would've played better," Albrecht said. "However, our three freshmen got tournament experience and that's important heading into next season."

Lopez, a senior from Naucalpan, Mexico, finished with MSU's best record going 13-6 in singles action, including a 6-4 Big Sky slate. MSU's top doubles tandem included senior Ellie Crum and Middel. The duo posted an impressive 13-3 overall mark and went 9-1 in Big Sky Conference play. The twosome also put together a 12-match win streak.
