BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Montana State women's tennis team sent off their seniors in style with a decisive 6-1 win over Weber State on Sunday.
The Bobcats (8-10, 4-4) gained momentum early when they clinched the doubles point and carried the energy throughout the match, ending the regular season on a high note. The Wildcats (2-16, 0-8) took just one point from the Montana State squad, who picked up five singles wins.
"This was a great win to finish off the regular season," head coach Hailey Barrett said. "To be here in Bozeman was awesome. The crowd was fantastic and the environment was so good for us."
Nia Gelashivilli and Angel Bean snagged the first doubles win of the day, defeating the No. 2 Wildcat duo 6-1. Senior Anna Wise clinched the point for the Bobcats with partner Terezie Stverakova on court one with a 6-2 win.
Lola Bean and Kavya Khirwar were leading 4-3 on court three when the doubles point was decided.
Angel Bean brought in the first singles point with a straight-set victory over Paulina Aleksandrowicz on court two and escaped the second set without giving up a game. Stverakova followed suite in the No. 4 singles spot, defeating Alicia Celorio to set the Cats up 3-0.
Wise dropped her first set 3-6, but came back to win the second 7-5. She trailed early in the deciding set, but brought the score to four games apiece before securing the next two games for a 6-4 win over Jessica Hill, clinching the victory for the Bobcats and finishing with a senior day win in her final match in Bozeman.
Gelashivilli won her first set 6-1, but lost momentum after a 10-8 tiebreak in the second set and dropped MSU's only singles match of the day.
Lola Bean took care of business in the most productive victory of the day, giving up just two games against Savannah Johnson to finish 6-2, 6-0 and extending the home team's lead.
Khirwar was the last competitor on the court after a gritty first set with Naomi Johnson. The senior wrapped up the day's festivities with a 7-2 tiebreak to end the second set and solidify the Montana State victory.
With the win, the Bobcat women solidify their place as the sixth seed in the Big Sky Conference Championships, which will take place in Phoenix, Arizona next week. They will open play against the three seed, Idaho State, on Thursday, April 23.
"We're so excited to secure our spot in the conference tournament," Barrett said. "It's been a goal for us all year. We put in the work and did the things we needed to do to make it. I'm so proud of this team and excited to see what we do next week. It's a whole new season starting on Thursday and we're looking forward to getting to Phoenix and getting to work."
