Three Bobcats shoot in the 70s, including Jaylee Tait who completes play with an even-par 72
PALM DESERT, Calif. – Montana State women's golf shot its best round as a team to close out the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate Sunday, Oct. 2, at the Classic Club.
The Bobcats completed the final round by shooting a 303, improving on their first two round scores of 308 and 317 for a total of 928 and finishing in ninth place. Santa Clara won the tournament with an 882, which included Annie Freman who led all individuals with a three-round 6-under-par 210. Cal Poly finished runner-up at 887 strokes and UC-Riverside placed third with 889.
Junior Jaylee Tait led the Bobcats at the Intercollegiate by closing out the meet with an even-par 72. She finished 5-over-par (221) and tied for sixth individually.
"My approach shots were pretty solid all three rounds, which gave me good birdie opportunities," Tait said. "I kept myself from getting any big numbers and capitalized when I could."
MSU Freshmen Coral Schulz and Kelly Hooper completed action by shooting in the 70s in the third round. Schulz fired a 2-over 74 and Hooper came in at 4-over 76. Hooper concluded the tournament by tying for 31st (231) while Schulz tied for 36th (235).
"I'm proud of the way Jaylee finished with her tying for sixth in a decent field this weekend," MSU head coach Brittany Basye said. "Coral and Kelly played well today and got some putts to drop. We played better, but we need a fourth score to get us to the 300 and under range."
Freshman Delaney Elliott tied for 50th with a 241 (77-83-81) and sophomore Clare Dittemore placed 67th with a 258 (90-84-84) to round out the Bobcat scoring.
"We need to continue to work on our chipping and specialty shots, how to go to a safe swing or plan B if plan A isn't working," Basye said. "I saw some good things from all five players today. We just need to keep building and not settle. We need to fight until the end and remain committed over every shot."
Montana State is scheduled to compete in the SCU Colby Invitational Oct. 31-Nov. 1 in San Jose, California.
"We have a good month of practice to prepare and work on our individual weaknesses from this week," Tait said. "If we can improve on those and keep doing what we're doing well, we will be able to put three solid rounds together as a team."
