Montana State sends five to the tees in San Jose to wrap up fall action
The Montana State women's golf team competes for the first time in a shade under a month – and for the final time of the fall – when the Bobcats begin action at the SCU Colby Invitational Monday, Oct. 31.
"We're very excited to get back to some competition," MSU head coach Brittany Basye said. "We had a few weeks of just practicing, so we worked a lot on our short games and focusing on targets."
MSU opens play at the par-72 Silver Creek Valley Country Club in San Jose, California, at 9:15 a.m. with two 18-hole rounds along with six other teams on the 6,181-yard course. The tournament concludes with a final round of 18 holes Tuesday starting at 9:15 a.m.
"Silver Creek is a course that can sneak up on you in a hurry if you're not hitting your targets," Basye said. "The greens can be tricky, so we need to hit the right section to give (ourselves) a good opportunity for par and better chance at birdies."
The Bobcats will be represented in the Invitational field by junior Jaylee Tait, freshman Elliott Delaney, senior Janelle Reali, sophomore Natassja Meredith and freshman Kelly Hooper.
Tait has led MSU through the first three events with a 75.00 scoring average, including her fall team-best tie for sixth-place finish at the Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate on Oct. 2. Hooper (75.33) and Reali (75.67) follow Tait on the scoring average list and are playing in their fourth and third events of the season, respectively. Elliott and Meredith will each be playing in their second event of the fall schedule.
"I think we can have a strong finish here being this is our last fall event," Basye said. "The five players here are playing very well and I expect them to finish strong. We need to have a good practice round and take good notes so we are prepared and have a good game plan (going into the first round)."
The SCU Colby Invitational wraps up MSU's 2016 portion of its schedule. The Bobcats return to play in 2017 on March 3 at the Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona, Arizona.
