The Bobcat golf team makes its first of four spring trips to Arizona when Montana State competes in the Grand Canyon Invitational beginning on Saturday, March 24, at the GCU Golf Course in Phoenix.
MSU comes off its first tournament of the spring in Riverside, Calif. The Bobcats completed the Battle at the Rock on Feb. 13 in 12th place with a three-round team score of 919 (318-300-301). The 'Cats used a solid final round to jump two spots in the team standings, while senior Jaylee Tait's 6-over-par 222 led the way for the Bobcats individually.
"We're definitely using that as momentum," said Montana State head coach Brittany Basye on the team's end to the Battle at the Rock. "Our final two rounds of 300 and 301 are pretty good scores coming out of the winter. The biggest thing we noticed is that we need to be more competitive. If we're going birdie-birdie-birdie, then we need to continue that aggressiveness. If we're having issues, we need to stop the bleeding.
"The girls have a ton of talent, it's just a matter of getting them back into that competitive mode and focusing on the positives."
Tait and sophomore Kelly Hooper pace the Bobcats this season with both playing as the top two in the lineup this weekend. Hooper's 74.91 scoring average and Tait's 75.22 average lead the team and are currently ahead of the program's all-time best single-season scoring mark.
Sophomore Delaney Elliott currently is third among the Bobcats in scoring average (76.58). She's followed by Coral Schulz (78.17) and Lilly Navarre (78.58). Those three will round out the MSU five-person team traveling to Phoenix.
"GCU has a very good golf course and every person but Lilly has played it," Basye said. "We've been working hard the last couple days competing against each other to be ready to go."
The Bobcats competed at the Grand Canyon-hosted tournament in 2017 and finished seventh of 10 in the team standings. Fourteen teams will participate in the meet this year, with four other Big Sky members in the field. The course is expected to play at a par 72 and at 6,127 yards.
"This is a good field," Basye said. "There's five Big Sky Conference schools and we'll be focused on the other four that are competing. When we're getting ready we're basically saying we've got four schools that we need to be focused on.
"There are some schools however that are ranked ahead of us there as well that I'd like to have a good showing against because it helps our rankings."
The tournament field begins play with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on Saturday with a second set of 18 holes following the conclusion of the first round. The final round of action begins at 8 a.m. on Sunday. To follow along with the golfers on the course, live results will be available on golfstatresults.com.
