“We didn’t have any ownership under the rim,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “You can’t give a team like Montana extra possessions. A 25-rebound advantage gave them a lot of extra opportunities and they took advantage. Credit to them.”
Montana doubled-up Montana State under the boards and out-scored the Bobcats 42-18 in the paint, en route to an 87-63 victory on Saturday afternoon in Dahlberg Arena.
After a tight first half that saw eight lead changes, Montana (13-14, 9-7) held a 34-30 advantage at intermission.
The Lady Griz opened the third quarter with six unanswered points building a lead it would never relinquish. In the final minutes of the frame, UM guard Taylor Goligoski scored 11 consecutive points and Montana held a 20-point cushion heading into the fourth quarter.
Montana State (14-13, 8-8) cut the margin to 16-points in the opening minutes of the final quarter on back-to-back three-pointers from Oliana Squires, but would get no closer.
"We didn't have any ownership under the rim," said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. "You can't give a team like Montana extra possessions. A 25-rebound advantage gave them a lot of extra opportunities and they took advantage. Credit to them."
The Lady Griz won the battle of the boards 48-23, and combined with its 60.7 percent shooting in the second half, earned a season split with the Bobcats, who were a 17-point victor over UM in Bozeman.
"I thought Montana got really comfortable shooting in the second half," Binford said. "Defensively, we didn't have an answer."
Senior Hannah Caudill paced the Bobcats with a game-high 20 points, including six 3-pointers. In addition, the Spokane product dished out seven assists. Squires also finished in double-digits with 19 points, including five triples.
Caudill moved into 20th on MSU's all-time scoring chart with 1,025 points. She also built her school-record career assist mark to 489. Squires broke a streak of five games in single-figure scoring.
For the contest, the Bobcats shot 34.9 percent from the field and went 13-36 from long distance. Montana also held a sizeable advantage at the line converting 20-25 from the stripe, while MSU was six-of-10.
Montana was led by Madi Schoening with 18 points and 14 rebounds.
