“Overall, the team had good attitudes and competitiveness,” Reeves said. “We had some resilience by taking on some challenges from their opponents. Weber State is much stronger than one year ago and we battled well against them.”
Looking to snap a four-match Big Sky Conference losing streak the Montana State women's tennis team mixed up its line-up but it wasn't enough as the Bobcats fell 5-2 to Weber State on Saturday afternoon.
Weber State captured the opening doubles point with victories at Nos. 1 and 2. MSU's top duo of Laura Mary and Linda Vink dropped a close 7-6 decision in a tiebreaker.
"We mixed-up our doubles pairings again trying to get our momentum back," said MSU head coach Jon Reeves. "Doubles was quite close with two matches going to tiebreakers."
The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead following a win at No. 4 singles, before the Bobcats stormed back with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 singles. Mary won her match with a straight set 6-3, 6-2 decision over Caitlin Herb at the No. 2 spot, while freshman Annie Walker followed at No. 3 with a straight set showing, as well.
"Laura played a great match by keeping her composure and mentally focusing on a high energy level," Reeves said. "Annie played a good first set, but quickly found herself down 5-2 in the second. She rattled off the next five games and took the set 7-5."
MSU senior Angelina Philippova moved upped to No. 1 singles for the first time in her career. She entered the match with seven consecutive victories, but dropped a hard-fought 7-6, 6-4 decision to WSU's Pei Hsuan Kuo 7-6, 6-4.
"In singles we got off to a great start winning four of six opening sets," Reeves said. "Angelina fell short in a first set tiebreaker and came back from being down 4-1 in the second set to get it tied at 4-all, but just couldn't get over the hump."
Trailing 3-2, Weber State closed out the match with wins at Nos. 5 and 6 singles, both in three sets.
"Overall, the team had good attitudes and competitiveness," Reeves said. "We had some resilience by taking on some challenges from their opponents. Weber State is much stronger than one year ago and we battled well against them."
The Bobcats will play at Idaho State on Sunday.
