The Montana State golf team looks to use positive momentum from a strong final round in their opening tournament of the year going into their second tournament of the 2018-19 season. After completing play with a third-place finish at the Battle at Old Works in Anaconda on Tuesday, The Bobcats are slated to travel to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, for The Challenge at Coeur d'Alene Resort which begins on Monday, Sept. 17.
"This week we're playing two days with 18 holes each day," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "It's a little bit different of a lineup for this tournament, but everybody will be participating. There's only four teams competing so it's up for grabs. We have to be focused on winning a golf tournament. Any one of our girls could win the tournament individually and our team could win it."
Montana State will participate in two rounds of 18 holes on back-to-back days at The Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course. The tournament field features MSU, Montana, Idaho State and host Eastern Washington. A course that has won awards for its course conditions, MSU is using the upcoming experience in Coeur d'Alene to improve from its last outing and enjoy the process of getting better.
"I think the focus on this tournament was to get another event close to home," Basye said. "We got a couple of teams in our conference to join us. We thought it'd be a fun course to play at and it'll be a special experience to play it. Not a lot of people get to play a course like this, it's very prestigious.
"The focus for us is putting, putting and more putting. We missed a lot of putts. Our tournament last week was up for grabs and we just didn't take it because we weren't making any putts."
The Bobcat lineup will consist of Coral Schulz, Delaney Elliott, Kelly Hooper, Lilly Navarre and Clare Dittemore. Competing individually will be freshmen Hailey Oster, Lucia Prieto Romano and Sofia Rodriguez Todd.
MSU jumped from fifth to third between the second and third rounds at the co-hosted Battle at Old Works on Tuesday. The Bobcats recovered from rounds of 319 and 316 Monday to bounce back with a 297 team score in the final round, the 10th best single 18-hole round in program history.
Schulz led the way for MSU in the tournament by firing a 231 over three rounds. She serves as the Bobcats' No. 1 golfer in the lineup this Monday. Elliott, who led a group of four MSU golfers who shot in the 70s with a 72 to close out the Battle at Old Works, is in the No. 2 slot. Those two and the rest of the Bobcats head into their second of four meets during the fall portion of their schedule.
"The expectation is, we finished off the last tournament with a 297 in the third round, we need to carry that through," Basye said. "We need to be consistent. It shouldn't feel like a relaxing tournament for us, but we should have fun and take advantage of good course conditions and put up some good numbers."
The Challenge at Coeur d'Alene Resort begins with the first round of 18 holes on Monday beginning at 10 a.m. MST. The second and final round takes place at 9 a.m Tuesday. The tournament will not have live scoring available.
