“It was an amazing match,” Reeves said. “Laura was right there, going toe-to-toe with her the whole time. Matches like that, Laura walked off the court knowing what she put out there and was pleased with her performance. Of course, she wanted to win the match."
BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Montana State women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to Big Sky leading Northern Arizona on Saturday afternoon at the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center. The match was highlighted by two of the league's top players squaring off at No. 1 singles.
Northern Arizona (10-8, 6-1), who sits atop the Big Sky Conference standings, took the first point of the match with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles. Montana State (3-15, 1-8) captured a win at No. 1 as Laura Mary and Linnea Fristam combined for a 6-1 victory over Chiara Tomasetti and Adrianna Sosnowska.
The Lumberjacks took a 3-0 lead following wins at Nos. 3 and 4 singles and clinched the match at No. 2 singles as Hanneke Lodewijks held off Annie Walker 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
"I think NAU has two of the best four players in the conference," said MSU head coach Jon Reeves. "Their No. 1 and 2 kids are as good as any across the board year-after-year. They're rock solid. Laura and Annie were right there with them."
The highlight of the match came at the top spot as Mary went the distance with Tomasetti. Tomasetti, a product of Roesrath, Germany, entered the contest undefeated sporting a 16-0 overall record and a 6-0 Big Sky mark. She has also been ranked among the nation's top 100 this season.
Mary, who was riding six straight wins, opened the match with a 6-4 first set win. Tomasetti, a two-time First-Team All-Big Sky selection, turned the table in the middle set pulling away from 4-3 winning the final two games to force a third set. Tomasetti broke Mary early in the final set, before Mary returned the favor breaking Tomasetti's serve to even the contest at 5-5. Tomasetti again broke serve and held off Mary in the final two games for the victory.
"It was an amazing match," Reeves said. "Laura was right there, going toe-to-toe with her the whole time. Matches like that, Laura walked off the court knowing what she put out there and was pleased with her performance. Of course, she wanted to win the match."
Mary was the first Big Sky Conference player to take a set off of Tomasetti this season.
"Laura did a nice job taking control of the point," Reeves added. "She's got a big serve and found her way to the net. Laura is an outstanding tennis player when she's well-prepared in all facets of the match."
NAU captured straight sets wins at Nos. 5 and 6 singles to secure the 7-0 win.
The Bobcats will close out its season hosting the annual Cat-Griz match on Saturday, April 20 at 10 a.m. in the BATC.
"We're excited for the Montana match," Reeves said. "The way we played this weekend was great. Our attitudes and effort and everything were very good. Our match today was good if not better than our match with Weber State. We're moving in the right direction. We'll get some rest and then get ready for the Griz."
