Montana State makes its 2020 team debut when the Bobcats compete Friday on the campus of Idaho State
BOZEMAN, Mont. – Friday marks the first time Montana State track and field has both its men's and women's teams compete in 2020. The Bobcats are slated to participate at the Stacy Dragila Invitational, hosted on the campus of Idaho State, with the opening events starting at 3 p.m. in Pocatello.
"We are really excited to get going," said Lyle Weese, Montana State's director of track and field. "We've been really looking forward to competing again since our first meet in December. We can't wait to get out there together and get out on the conference track. In less than two months, we'll be competing for individual and team conference championships."
Montana State opened its indoor season on Dec. 7 with the Bobcat Preview inside of Worthington Arena. Duncan Hamilton and Noah Martin each recorded lifetime bests in an event en route to claiming Big Sky Athlete of the Week honors for their efforts at the meet. Alec Nehring and Elena Carter also recorded a personal best at the event, while Alex Hellenberg, McKenna Ramsay, Wyatt Thompson-Siporen and Cooper West earned first-place finishes in at least one event to highlight MSU's showing in its opening meet. The Bobcats also had several athletes compete in the annual Multis Meet in Worthington Arena from Jan. 6-7.
Idaho State's Holt Arena serves as the site of the 2020 Big Sky Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. Montana State will be one of 11 Big Sky members vying for a conference title from Feb. 27-29. The Stacy Dragila Invite will be MSU's lone opportunity to compete at the conference championship facility prior to the Big Sky meet's opening events on Feb. 27.
The last time Montana State competed in Holt Arena was in February of 2017 when the Bobcats participated in the Big Sky Indoor Championships. MSU finished that season with the men's and women's teams each claiming third-place showings at the conference meet.
"When we were putting together the schedule this year, we felt it was really important to get on their track and on their field event venues," Weese said. "Their track is a lot different (than ours). They have a banked track with a plywood surface. Instead of running with pyramid spikes, we'll be running with needle spikes and we'll have to put a little tape on our heels to make sure we don't slip. For all events on the track it's important especially for the 200, 400, and both the 60 and 60 hurdles. It'll be important to get comfortable running on plywood."
MSU will be competing in the meet alongside athletes from Idaho State, Montana and Carroll College. The Stacy Dragila Invite is the first of six meets the Bobcats appear in prior to the Big Sky Indoor Championships.
"We've had the Bobcat Preview and Multis Meet, but usually this first full meet after the winter break is when it feels like the indoor season is totally started," Weese said. "Once it starts, it goes quickly then all of a sudden it's outdoor season. Once we get started here, we'll be competing week after week and it'll start moving along quickly."
Live results for the Stacy Dragila Invitational are available on the Montana State track and field schedule page on msubobcats.com. More information about the meet can also be found on ISUBengals.com. The Bobcats are slated to host three more home meets prior the conference championships. They include the MSU Dual Invitational (Jan. 24), The MSU Indoor Open (Feb. 7) and the Big Sky Tuner (Feb. 21).
