BOZEMAN, Mont. – Montana State plays in its non-conference finale on Wednesday when the Bobcats host SAGU American Indian College in Worthington Arena. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
The Bobcats opened their four-game homestand on Sunday defeating Portland for the second time this season. MSU led for just over 10 seconds in the contest as the 'Cats took their first lead when Tyler Patterson hit a 3-pointer with 23 seconds left. The Bobcats, despite shooting a season-low 27.6% and scoring only 16 points in the first, topped the Pilots 61-59 thanks to an Amin Adamu turnaround jumper in the final seconds.
MSU improved to 8-4 overall with the victory over Portland and 7-3 in non-conference play this season. The Bobcats' current .700 win percentage in their non-conference slate is the program's best since the 1997-98 season when that team went 9-2 against non-Big Sky schools. That team featured a then junior Danny Sprinkle.
The Bobcats spend the majority of the next month in Bozeman. Following the four consecutive games in Worthington Arena from Dec. 19-Jan. 1, MSU heads to Idaho to take on the Vandals for a Jan. 6 contest. The Bobcats return to host their next two games, which will complete a stretch of six of seven games that take place at home.
MSU senior Xavier Bishop crossed over the 1,500-point threshold in his college career during the Bobcats' victory over the Pilots. Bishop heads into Wednesday's matchup with a career total of 1,507 points and 431 assists. Those marks rank 85th and 52nd, respectively, among active players.
Two other Bobcats are closing in on high-level achievements. Adamu currently has 792 career points, while Jubrile Belo has 886 points. Belo also ranks among MSU's top 10 all-time in field goal percentage and blocks.
Montana State wrapped up its slate of games versus Summit League opponents on Dec. 11 when MSU played St. Thomas in St. Paul. The Bobcats finished 2-1 against Summit League opposition.
Montana State has been paced by its customary starting lineup of Adamu, Belo, Bishop, Patterson and Abdul Mohamed. Four of those Bobcats have started in every game while Patterson has started in each contest but one. Every player in that group is averaging more than 26 minutes per game on the court and scoring in double digits.
Several key figures are starting to stand out as MSU closes out the non-conference portion of its schedule for the 2021-22 season. The Bobcats are 8-2 this year when an opponent shoots under 50%, including a 7-1 mark when the 'Cats outshoot the opposition. MSU is 5-1 this year when outrebounding its opponent. The Bobcats are also 8-0 this season when they keep an opponent to scoring less than 70 points.
SAGU American Indian College visits Bozeman having already played three Division I teams recently. The Warriors lost to Idaho (84-55) on Dec. 18, Dixie State (114-49) on Dec. 15 and Montana (118-49) on Dec. 13.
Montana State's game against SAGU American Indian College will be streamed on ESPN+. The game will also be broadcast on the Bobcat Radio Network on KMMS 1450 AM as well as on the Varsity Network app. Links for live streams, live stats and radio coverage are available on the men's basketball schedule page on msubobcats.com.
