Four Bobcats fired rounds in the 70s over the course of the second set of 18 holes in Phoenix on Monday
PHOENIX, Ariz. – Montana State picked up its play between the first and second rounds as the women's golf team completed the opening day of action at the GCU Spring Invitational on Monday, March 1, at the Grand Canyon University Golf Course.
Montana State carded a 321 as a team during the first round of play and sat in 15th following 18 holes. The Bobcats had a 14-stroke improvement by recording a 307 in the second round which was the eighth best second-round score in the field. MSU (628) is currently in 14th place and is just behind fellow foes Southern Utah (621), Eastern Washington (621) and North Dakota State (623).
"You could tell the team was nervous during the first round," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "They haven't played in a competitive tournament in a year so I don't blame them. They started to get comfortable once they got through a few holes. GCU's course has Bermuda grass and those chips are tricky since we don't get to practice on it. It took us awhile to get use to that early on."
MSU was led by Kameryn Basye who was making her first appearance as a Bobcat. She completed back-to-back low rounds of 78 and 75 for Montana State. Her 9-over-par 153 has her in a tie for 37th overall.
Sofia Rodriguez Todd, Hannah Rosanova and Annika Danenhauer factored into the scoring lineup each round for the Bobcats. The trio rebounded from tough opening rounds to fire a 76, 77 and 79, respectively, in the second set of 18 holes. Rodriguez Todd (156) is tied for 51st, Rosanova (159) is tied for 62nd and Danenhauer (160) sits in 68th overall.
"Kameryn played really consistent for us and Sofia was consistent as well which really helped us today," Brittany Basye said. "Hannah came back from a tough first round to really help out our team score in the second round which was good to see."
Rounding out MSU's lineup was Hailey Oster (179) who is currently in 82nd.
The host Antelopes of Grand Canyon is atop the team competition with 577 strokes and is trailed by Cal Baptist (579). Grand Canyon's Tagiralani Luafalealo is the individual leader with a 4-under 140 while her teammate Alexis Jones, playing individually, is in second place by a stroke.
The Bobcats are scheduled to begin the third and final round of action at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
"Overall our second round was way better," Brittany Basye said. "I saw a few more putts that could have easily gone in. Now tomorrow they can hopefully relax right from the get go and find their games. They didn't give up and fought through 36 holes today. I'll take four scores in the 70s in a round for the first tournament."
