“Today was a great team win,” said MSU head coach Suzie Woodburn. “We lost the doubles point, but we were resilient and earned our four points in singles. The team had confidence, belief, and played our style of tennis.”
After dropping the opening doubles point Montana State stormed back to capture four of six singles matches, en route to a 4-2 victory over Gonzaga on Friday afternoon at Stevens Center.
"Today was a great team win," said MSU head coach Suzie Woodburn. "We lost the doubles point, but we were resilient and earned our four points in singles. The team had confidence, belief, and played our style of tennis."
Montana State (6-3) dropped matches at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles but received a 6-2 decision at the top spot as Marta Garcia-Reboredo and Hudson Hawkins combined for the win over Kiana Oda and Tiegan Aitken.
Senior Felicia Jayasaputra quickly evened the contest defeating GU's Brooke Bittner 6-0, 6-4, before Oda notched a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 2 to give the Zags a 2-1 cushion. Garcia-Reboredo dispatched Emily Robertson at the top spot 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 to grab the momentum for MSU as Meg McCarty and Jazmin Lerman followed with straight set wins at Nos. 3 and 5 to clinch the match for the Bobcats.
"Marta had a great match and the momentum turned in our direction," Woodburn said. "Meg closed out a tough match followed by Jazmin (Lerman) clinching it a few points behind."
