Max Relic returns to lineup to spark Bobcats
The start and finish were good enough, and Montana State dominated the middle portion of its men's tennis conference opener Saturday to earn a 5-2 win at Portland State.
After narrowly capturing the doubles point, rallying for a 6-4 win at No. 1 and a 6-3 victory at No. 2 after the Vikings opened play by winning at the third ladder spot, the Bobcats opened singles play with three consecutive wins to clinch the match. Grad student Andras Necz did the honors with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 3.
"The guys did a great job shifting the momentum after a slow start," said MSU coach Rob Bareford. "It wasn't their best tennis overall but we found a way to win. We're happy to grab a win versus a conference opponent."
With Max Relic back in the lineup holding down the top of the order, the depth of the lineup emerged. Relic took little time securing a 6-3, 6-1 win, and Rayen Hermassi's 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 pushed the Bobcats within a point of clinching.

In doubles play, Necz and Relic rallied for a 6-4 win on court one to clinch the win. It came not long after Hermassi and Stewart won at No. 2 to draw the Cats even. Almost immediately Necz relieved the team competition of drama, and after Andre Stewart fell 6-4, 7-5 on court five Dario Ciobotaru rallied for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2. PSU's Simon Kuszynski beat Jacob Huppin 7-6 (4), 6-4 on court six to close the match.
The Bobcats now stand 5-4 overall, and are 1-0 in Big Sky play. The Vikings are 3-4, 0-1. Montana State heads across the city on Sunday, facing Portland at 11 am on the UP campus.
