Eddie Biss clinches match with serve, steady play
BOZEMAN, Mont. (April 5, 2026) – Eddie Biss toed the baseline of court two in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon, leading his match at No. 6 singles 6-5. His Montana State team and Weber State stood in a 3-3 deadlock as the match neared the five-hour mark.
The Bobcat sophomore rifled a serve, Weber State's Clement Lecoq got the outer rim of his racket on the ball as it sped past, and Biss' MSU teammates swarmed the court to celebrate the victory. "When (his serve) goes in, it feels quite good," Biss said moments later. "It was so fun out there."
Biss' fun extended to his Bobcat teammates as they rejoiced in the 4-3 win that raised the team's record to 6-11 overall and 2-3 in Big Sky play. The victory gives the Cats a tie-breaker advantage of Weber State (2-12, 1-4) in the chase for a berth in the Big Sky Conference Tournament that begins April 23.
"It was awesome to win that match," said Montana State head coach Mateus Ceolin. "We have a lot to improve on, we need to get better, but we kept fighting. We battled. And we found a way to win."
After steamrolling through the first set then taking game one of the second, Biss wobbled. He fell behind 3-1. "It's awesome to see how much he's improved," Ceolin said. "Especially if you look at last year, in these types of situations he just wouldn't be able to perform. But he's put in a lot of work, he's put in a lot of reps, he's worked on the things he needed to work on. And he works extremely hard. We saw all of that coming out of him today."
Biss was just one of Montana State's heroes on Sunday. It began with the doubles point, when the Cats took matches at No. 2 and No. 3, with Andre Stewart and Biss leading at No. 1 when the Bobcats clinched the point. Yassin Elarousyy and Max Calaquian got things rolling with a 6-1 win over Lecoq and Theo Mottier at the third spot. Then Camille Chantron and David Ismanescu earned a 6-4 win over Toit Malan and William Zulch at No. 2.
"That made all the difference," Ceolin said of his team's doubles win. It came on the heels of a loss in doubles against Northern Arizona on Thursday, when the Bobcats dropped a 4-3 decision. "It we lose doubles today we lose 4-3 again. But the guys did a better job today sticking to the game plan, ticking to the basics, serving volume, doing the simple things. We were fortunate to get the doubles point."
After that win-within-the-win, though, "They might have relaxed a little," Ceolin said of his team. The result was a quick turnaround with the Wildcats taking wins at the first and second ladder spots to jump in front 2-1.
Then the bottom of the lineup took over. Freshman Ethan Masselis earned a hard-fought 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 4, and one court over sophomore Camille Chantron fought to another three-set win. He took down Dawid Scholtz 7-5, 1-6, 6-3.
"At that point Weber had all the momentum," Ceolin said. "Then Ethan got his point and Cami got that point, and that was big-time for how this ended up. I'm super happy for Cami, proud of Cami, and he deserves it. He's struggled some this year, but he works so hard on a daily basis."
The Wildcats bounced back to take a win at No. 5 singles. William Zulch gook a 6-2, 7-6 (3) decision from David Ismanescu.
Then it came down to Biss and his ability to steady himself. It began with his serve. "I need to focus on keeping (his first serve success) going," Biss said, noting that he faced clinch-or-lose situations earlier in his career. "I've been in one of those situations before and was on the wrong side of it," he said. "So I was just enjoying the moment. I was enjoying this one. It's super fun."
Ceolin was thrilled that Biss persevered through the struggles to win the clincher. "Eddie is another guy that works so hard every day," he said. "It was awesome to see him get it done for us."
The win vaults the Bobcats into the race for a spot in the Big Sky's six team tournament. At 6-0, NAU is barreling toward the regular season title. Montana is 3-1 after falling to NAU on Sunday, while Idaho State is 3-2 with a league win over MSU in its hip pocket. The Bobcats and Idaho are each 2-3, and MSU owns the tie-breaker, with Portland State (2-4), Sacramento State (1-3) and Weber State (1-4) in pursuit.
