“We keep working hard and keep rolling along,” said MSU head coach Suzie Woodburn. “We’re focused on having fun and finding joy in the game.”
The Montana State women's tennis team ran its current Big Sky Conference winning streak to three matches with a 7-0 sweep of Weber State on Sunday afternoon in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center. MSU has captured seven of its last eight matches.
"We keep working hard and keep rolling along," said MSU head coach Suzie Woodburn. "We're focused on having fun and finding joy in the game."
Montana State (13-5, 4-3) won the crucial opening doubles point as its No. 1 tandem of Marta Garcia-Reboredo and Hudson Hawkins posted a 7-5 win over Weber State's (12-9, 4-4) Megan Davies and Ana Morett. MSU's No. 3 duo of Andrea Cuquerella and Paula Dougherty also claimed a victory with a 6-3 decision over Jessica Hill and Kenadee Semenik.
"The energy could've been better in doubles, but we found a way," Woodburn said. "For us to get the momentum in doubles was huge. From that point, everyone was locked and dialed in."
The Bobcats picked up its first singles point as Bozeman product Meg McCarty used a variety of shots to sweep Dylan Lolofie, 6-0, 6-2.
"Meg moves the ball so smartly on the court," Woodburn said. "She just does her thing and disrupts. Her craftiness is fun to watch."
Senior Jazmin Lerman won her second straight match at No. 4 with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Sicely Ferreira, giving the Bobcats 3-0 advantage.
"It's fun to see Jazmin peaking at the right time," Woodburn stated. "She comes to work every day smiling and enjoying it. Her dad's here from Argentina, and she played to win."
Montana State's biggest victory of the contest came at No. 2 singles as Dougherty, a freshman from Raleigh, N.C., dispatched two-time First Team All-Big Sky Conference standout Ana Morett in three sets, 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-3. The win clinched the match for the Bobcats.
"Paula has really been working on her concentration," Woodburn commented. "She really committed to her game and found a way to get a pretty significant victory."
MSU pushed its lead to 5-0 as Garcia-Reboredo recorded a 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 win over Davies at the top spot.
"Marta has really embraced her role as an upperclassman, playing No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles," Woodburn said. "She has stepped up and is playing so consistently every time she steps on the court."
Montana State's final two points came at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively. Felicia Jayasaputra played her first singles match in over a month and cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Li Yang Ping An. Bobcat freshman Hawkins completed the sweep with a 10-5 win over Semenik in a super tiebreaker.
"I was so happy for Felicia to step into the line up and play dominant tennis," Woodburn said. "She was really enjoying herself and it was great to see her get a huge win. And Hudson is trusting her game and getting it done. Once again, she is using her big serve."
