“Taylee was a monster,” Binford said. “She had an incredible game, and we’re just seeing the tip of the iceberg.”
Montana State built just enough cushion in the third quarter and withstood a late Eastern Washington run in the fourth, en route to a 58-56 win over the Eagles on Monday night at Reese Court.
With the victory, Montana State's (17-2, 7-0) consecutive win streak moves to ten games.
"We got it done," said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. "Eastern Washington played great. We weren't at our best. I thought we were a bit rattled and rushed things. Offensively, we were out of rhythm. We have a lot to learn from this game, but it was also a game that tested us, and that was something we needed."
Eastern Washington (6-12, 2-4) held an 18-11 lead after the opening period, before the MSU offense got on track, chipping the margin to 27-26 at intermission.
Trailing 29-28 just 30-seconds into the third quarter, the Bobcats went on a 15-0 run over the course of six minutes sparked by freshman Taylee Chirrick's six points and three steals. MSU owned a 43-29 advantage as Marah Dykstra converted the second of two free throws at the 3:30 mark.
Montana State built its largest lead at 49-34 with 42-seconds left in the third on a pull-up jumper by Esmeralda Morales.
EWU turned the table in the final frame continuing to chip away at the deficit before Alex Pettis nailed a corner three-pointer to even the contest at 52-all with 2:06 remaining. MSU quickly responded as Dykstra hit two free throws followed by a Morales jumper giving the Bobcats a 56-52 lead with 1:33 left.
A Kourtney Grossman layin cut the margin to two, before a Chirrick free throw gave MSU a 57-54 lead with 52-seconds remaining. EWU's Jacey Eggers layin with eight seconds left pulled the Eagles to within one point. Eastern quickly fouled Morales on the in-bounds and the Bobcat senior hit the backend of two charity tosses.
EWU's Peyton Howard missed a layin in attempt as time expired giving MSU its eighth consecutive win at Reese Court.
Chirrick, who played the last two seasons at Roberts High School, finished with 12 points and a school-record 11 steals.
"Taylee was a monster," Binford said. "She had an incredible game, and we're just seeing the tip of the iceberg."
Morales paced the Bobcats with 15 points, including a seven-of-nine effort from the line. Katelynn Martin also reached double digits with 10 points, while hauling down six rebounds. Dykstra finished with nine points and a team-best seven boards.
Grossman led the Eagles with 18 points and 19 rebounds.
