Bengals push past finish line with late surge
Montana State played its most complete men's tennis match of the season against a Division I opponent, falling just short in a 4-3 loss at Idaho State on Friday.
The homestanding Bengals won a nearly six-hour slugfest after MSU took a 3-2 lead by capturing singles matches at the fifth and sixth ladder spots. Each of the deciding contests lasted the full three sets.
"I was an incredible six-hour battle," said MSU coach Mateus Ceolin. "Most of our guys left it all out there today. I am very proud of how this young group fought and competed."
The Cats opened the day by capturing the doubles point. Freshmen Alex Vlahos and Camille Chantron topped Jayden Ciguenza and Lewie Bouman 6-3, then Dmitry Bezborodov and Harrison Janes edged Valent De and Sam Wensley 7-5.
After Idaho State evened the score with a win at No. 2 singles, the Bobcats took a 2-1 lead when Andre Stewart took a hard-fought 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) win at No. 3. Idaho State evened the score again at No. 1 with a three-set win, but Chantron pushed MSU within a point of the win by topping Quentin Lamothe 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 in a thriller. The Bobcats couldn't push past the finish line, as Idaho State took the matches at No. 5 and No. 6 to claim the non-conference win.
"I'm looking forward to watching our guys compete and continue to grow (on Saturday," Ceolin said. "Playing our first conference match is an important step."
MSU plays at Weber State on Saturday at 1 pm in the first Big Sky tilt for each team.
