Cats host home fall tournament for first time in a decade
BOZEMAN, Mont. (July 23, 2025) – The Montana State men's tennis program travels throughout the west and hosts its first home tournament in a decade during its fall schedule, announced by MSU head coach Mateus Ceolin on Thursday.
"Our fall schedule was built to get our guys plenty of matches," Ceolin said. "A few players are coming off a gap year where they focused on developing their games, so it's exciting to get them back into competition."
Montana State enters the fall with eight rostered players, led by third-year anchor Andre Stewart. The Portugal native carries two years of starting experience, playing throughout 2024-25 primarily at No. 2. Camille Chantron, Yassin Elaroussy and Eddie Biss each won between six and eight singles matches as freshmen last season.
Another returner makes his Bobcat debut this fall. Oumar Diallo transferred to Montana State in January from Bucknell, redshirting to satisfy transfer requirements. He plays in 2025-26 as a sophomore, joining a group of incoming freshmen to round out the roster. Elijah Calaquian, David Imanescu and Ethan Masellis form a core of young talent, and Ceolin is pleased that they'll be together for a fall season.
The Bobcats open fall play with three regional events in September. MSU plays at the Boise Invitational September 12-14, the Idaho State Invitational September 19-21, and the Bedford Cup at the Air Force Academy September 26-28. October begins with a trip to the Utah Invitational in Salt Lake City.
"We're kicking off our fall season in Boise, Idaho—a great opportunity to get the ball rolling and see our guys compete against strong competition," Ceolin said. "Boise puts on a top-notch event with several Big Sky programs, making it a solid early test for us. It'll give us a good sense of where we stand and what we need to sharpen as the fall progresses. The following week, we head to Pocatello for the ISU Invite. These first two events will feature our full roster, giving everyone valuable match play and a chance to build team chemistry early in the season. The ISU Invite will be another strong test, with several Big Sky teams in the mix.
"The next two weekends—Bedford Cup and the Utah Invite—will focus more on individual development," Ceolin continued. "We'll split the team, with half competing at each event. Both tournaments offer the chance to face high-level opponents from across the Mountain Region, giving our guys exposure to a broader field of competition. Travelling with smaller groups also allows us to spend more focused time with each player and really dig into the details of their games."
Competition ramps up in mid-October with the ITA Regional Tournament at UNLV. "Based on performances throughout the fall, we'll take our top four players to the ITA Regionals—our biggest event of the semester," Ceolin said. "Regionals is the pinnacle of our fall schedule, with a shot to qualify for the NCAA individual and doubles championships. This year, it'll be hosted at UNLV—a great event in Vegas that our players always look forward to."
A tradition returns to Bozeman on October 24, when the Cats host the Bobcat Invitational. It marks the first time in a decade that MSU hosts a fall men's tournament, and Ceolin said that playing at home is as much about the 2025 portion of the schedule as the fall.
"After Regionals, we're excited to bring back the Bobcat Invite for the first time since 2015," he said. "It'll be great to get our guys competing at home and experiencing what it feels like to play in front of a home crowd. We're expecting strong competition, with players from Denver, BYU, Utah, Montana, and Idaho State set to join us. We are hoping to get a great turnout for some of the matches and start building excitement for the spring season."
The Bobcats finish the fall the way they started, facing strong competition from within and also outside the Rocky Mountain region. "We'll wrap up our fall season at the Denver Hidden Duals. We were thrilled to receive an invite to this event—it promises to be another high-level weekend of competition and a great way to close out the semester."
Ceolin indicated the team's schedule for spring 2025 will be completed in the next few weeks.
