Cats battle traditional regional power
BOZEMAN, Mont. (Feb. 4, 2026) – Looking to extend the momentum created with a pair of home wins last weekend, Montana State's men's tennis team plays at BYU on Thursday at 5:30 pm.
The Bobcats square off with a BYU team that enters the match with a 3-0 record after weekend wins over Portland (5-2) and Hawaii (4-1). The Cougars beat Weber State 6-1 to open the season before last weekend's wins in Hawaii. BYU lost the doubles point in each match, but won eight of the nine singles matches.
Montana State took care of business Saturday by sweeping Division III Whitworth 7-0, then battled to a back-and-forth 4-3 win over Idaho State on Saturday. Ethan Masselis clinched the win, fittingly, at No. 6 singles. The Bobcats stand 3-3 on the season, but own a 5-1 record at both No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
The Cougars are one of the traditional powers in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). BYU finished 72nd nationally a year ago, fifth in the Mountain Region.
After Thursday's match, scheduled for the BYU Indoor Tennis Courts, the Cats are off until the conference opener on February 28 at Portland State.
