Montana State captures top two ladder positions
BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State captured singles wins at the top two ladder spots, but Idaho took every other point in a 5-2 Big Sky Conference men's tennis win in Bozeman on Saturday.
"We got a great effort from Andre and Dima today," said Bobcat head coach Mateus Ceolin. "This was the best I have seen Andre play and compete all year. He has been doing a great job on the practice court and that is starting to show on match day. It's no surprise that Dima's getting it done, he has put in consistent work all year and has earned each of his victories."
Andre Stewart captured a 6-4, 6-1 win for Montana State at No. 2 singles, and Dmitry Bezborodov followed that with a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles. Those matches , in close succession, gave MSU a 2-1 lead after Idaho took the doubles point. But that was the only scoring for MSU on the afternoon.
Ceolin said the Vandals experience and aggression showed. "All in all, Idaho did a better job finishing points at the net," he said "They stepped up on short balls and had no fear coming forward. They played aggressive tennis and played to win. Congratulations to Coach Raleigh and his team. He had his guys ready to go."
The Bobcats return to action on Sunday at 11 am, hosting Portland State in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center. MSU is now 2-16 overall this season, 0-3 in Big Sky play, while Idaho is 9-5 overall, 3-0 in the league.
"There's another opportunity for us tomorrow," he said. "We have been close. Even thought it has been a year filled with adversity, we have been able to find small wins here and there in every match. Our locker room stays strong and full of belief that our day is right around the corner. The goal for (Sunday) is to believe in everything we do on the tennis court and stretch Portland State to the extra mile. There's no rush for us to finish the match, we will stay out there as long as it takes."
