“We battled and left our hearts on the court,” said MSU head coach Suzie Woodburn.
The Montana State women's tennis team gave top-seeded Northern Arizona everything they could muster before eventually falling 4-2 to the Big Sky regular season champions in semifinal action of the league tournament, Friday morning at the Phoenix Tennis Center.
"We battled and left our hearts on the court," said MSU head coach Suzie Woodburn. "We had our opportunities. We were right there, fighting for every point. I couldn't be prouder of this team and the progression of getting one day better every time we stepped on the court."
Friday's opening doubles action went as expected between the best in the league. Northern Arizona's (15-3) Daryna Shoshyna and Elen Jantacova knocked off Montana State's (11-11) top pairing of Meg McCarty and Jojo Bach, 6-3. The Lumberjacks captured the opening point as its duo of Ruslana Kovalenko and Andrea Noguera held off Angel Bean and Nia Gelashvili at No. 3, 7-6 - winning the tiebreaker 10-8. MSU's No. 2 tandem of Marta Garcia-Reboredo and Hudson Hawkins were headed to a tiebreaker as well before the match went abandoned.
"The doubles play was outstanding," Woodburn said. "It was such a high-level of tennis and fun to watch. Unfortunately, we came up just a bit short."
Bobcat freshman Gelashvili put MSU on the board opening singles play at No. 4 with a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Noguera. Hawkins, a sophomore from Las Vegas, quickly followed with a straight set 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 over Kovalenko to put the Bobcats up 2-1.
"Both Nia and Hudson were locked in," Woodburn said. "They played with great energy."
NAU got back on track with victories at Nos. 3 and 5 to retake the lead 3-2. The Lumberjacks clinched the match at the top spot as Shoshyna rallied past Garcia-Reboredo 5-7, 6-1, 6-1. McCarty, playing at No. 2, was tied with Niewiadomska at a set apiece, before the contest was halted with the NAU clinch.
"The program took a big step in the right direction this season," Woodburn said. "They are inspired to get back here next year and win a championship."
