Bengals take doubles point, three of six singles matches
BOZEMAN, Montana – Idaho State's Luka Vujacic outlasted Bobcat freshman Eddie Biss in a three-set thriller to clinch the Bengals' 4-3 men's tennis win at Montana State on Sunday.
The back-and-forth match featured wins by the Bobcats at three of the top four ladder positions, while Idaho State won at No. 5 and No. 6 singles after capturing the doubles point. "I'm really happy for Yassin (Elaroussy at No. 3 singles) and Camille (Chantron at No. 4)," said Bobcats head coach Mateus Ceolin. "They competed and showed heart, and I hope up and down the lineup all of us take a lesson from that."
After Idaho State won at the bottom two ladder positions to clinch the doubles point, Elaroussy jumped all over ISU's Jowan Rawson on court three. The Bobcat freshman took the first set 6-1 and led 5-0 in the second before Rawson withdrew. Valentino De Pellegrin topped MSU's Andre Stewart 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 singles to give the Bengals a 2-1 lead.
At the same time, MSU's Dmitry Bezborodov was enduring a slugfest against Idaho State's Victor Sklenka on court one. The match stayed on serve until 4-4, when Bezborodov broke serve to take a 5-4 lead. "When I broke (serve)," Bezborodov said, "even though I was down 40-0 in that game, I felt like I was putting pressure on him."
After that, MSU's top singles player cruised. He held serve to close the set 6-4, the coasted to a 6-2 win in set two. "Honestly, I just felt better in the second set," he said. "I was pushing through balls a little more, deeper. In the first set I thought I was a little short and that he was taking advantage by going to the net, but in the second set I did a better job keeping him back on the baseline. Then, I was the better baseline player and I could read (balls) better from that point."
Ceolin's confidence in his top singles player never wavered, he said. "As I've said all season, Dima works every single day of the week and I have the utmost confidence in him. I know the work he puts in all week, so it's no surprise when he wins on match day."
Bezborodov's win squared the match at 2-2, but Idaho State's Quentin Lamothe beat Harrison Janes 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 pushed the Bengals in front 3-2 and set up a pair of three-set classics. At No. 4 singles, Chantron took the first set 6-4, but dropped the second set 6-1. Chantron fell behind 3-1 in the deciding set, but broke serve to go up 5-4 and then served out for the win.
That set up a showdown at No. 6 singles between Eddie Biss and Idaho State's Luka Vujacic. Biss took a 5-3 lead in set one before Vujacic rallied for a 7-5 win. Biss dominated in winning the second set 6-1, but Vujacic held off Biss for a 6-2 match-clinching win.
"We'll keep working hard," Ceolin said. "We've made progress all season, and now we need to finish strong and build for the future."
The Bobcats fall to 3-17 on the season, 1-4 in Big Sky play, while Idaho State is now 9-10 overall, 3-2 in the league. The Bobcats host Eastern Washington for Senior Night at 5 pm Thursday at the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
