Heidemann paced the Bobcats with a match-high 16 kills, while Greenwald added eight and Spelts seven. MSU’s outside hitting duo of Heidemann and Tufto combined for 24 kills and a .339 attack mark.
Midway through the first set it was apparent Montana State was battling opening night jitters, especially with four freshmen on the court. But the Bobcats settled down and finished the set on a 10-3 run, en route to a 25-16, 25-23, 25-19 victory over Prairie View A&M in its opening match of the EVEN Hotel Bobcat Invite, Friday night in Shroyer Gym.
"I thought it was a good first match," said MSU third-year head coach Matt Houk. " It had everything you expect. It had some highs, and it had some lows. And I think you have to expect that we're going to ebb and flow a little bit. It's the first real match played at home in front of friends and family. You know, all the feels going on. I thought overall, the good outweighed everything else. And so, I'm pleased with it. We're going to have to be better tomorrow. But yeah, that was good for start."
Sophomore Karli Heidemann sparked Montana State (1-0) in the opening set with seven kills, while posting a .636 attack mark. Defensively, libero Lauren Lindseth notched 11 digs.
The second set featured 15 ties and eight lead changes. Trailing 21-19 down the stretch, the Bobcats rattled off three straight points taking a 22-21 lead following a block by Elli Tufto and Camryn Greenwald. MSU didn't relinquish its advantage in the waning moments as Joelie Spelts closed out the set with a kill.
MSU outhit Prairie View A&M (0-1) .189 to .073 in the final frame for the win.

"That was a nice performance from Karli and Tufto," Houk said. "Everyone contributed. Kenzie (Makenzie Jackson) had great attack numbers until the third set, and we know she hasn't played volleyball for two years, and I thought she did a great job for her first time being out there."
Lindseth paced the Bobcat defense finishing with 21 digs, while Madilyn Siebler and Heidemann chipped in eight saves, apiece.
Freshman setter Teagan Jaynes dished out 37 assists and added seven digs.
"We got everything we needed out of Lo (Lindseth), and she is just anchoring us in the back," Houk said. "She is our rock.
"And when you have a good setter that can deliver the ball, the team can put up numbers like a .274 attack percentage."
