BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Montana State volleyball team lost its second straight match on Thursday night, falling in three sets to Portland State. The Bobcats (15-9, 8-5) had swept the Vikings (12-12, 8-5) in Oregon earlier this season but could not find repeat success in Shroyer Gym.
Â
"We did not play like we deserved to win that game," head coach Matt Houk said. "We have to turn the page and put that one behind us. We are capable of playing to a higher level than we did tonight, so the team needs to respond and prove that as we get down the stretch." Â
Â
It was a slow start to the evening for the Bobcats, as Portland State opened the match with a three-point scoring run. Montana State was able to shorten the visitor's lead as the set went on, and while a 4-0 run delayed the decision, the Vikings ultimately finished the first at 25-16.
Â
The Bobcats gained a brief stretch of energy early in the second set, as the crowd came alive, but the Vikings did not allow the momentum to continue, tying the score at 19 each. MSU snuck in just three more points before Portland State solidified a two-set lead with a 25-21 score.
Â
In the final set of the night, the Bobcats put up their strongest efforts with a .302 hitting percentage but still came up short after trading points back and forth through 10 tie scores. Portland State sealed the match at 25-22.
Even though the Bobcats came up short, Lauren Greeny's performance was a highlight, with nine kills, four digs, and a pair of blocks. Joelie Spelts matched Greeny's nine kills, adding five blocks, including two solo. Alice Steman led the team with a .462 hitting percentage, landing 7 kills on 13 swings. Nicolette Noble was the leading defensive player for MSU, with 11 digs on the night.

Montana State returns to Shroyer Gym at 7 p.m. MT on Saturday to face Northern Arizona in their second matchup of the season. Single match tickets are on sale now.
