Montana State to compete in five regular-season tournaments this spring
BOZEMAN, Mont. --- After nearly four months off from competition, the Montana State women's golf team opens its spring portion of the season with Mountain Classic Match Play in Palm Desert, Calif., starting on Monday and continuing through Wednesday.
Mountain Classic Match Play, hosted by Boise State and Wyoming at the par-72, 6,119-yard Classic Club, features three days of bracket-style match play involving eight teams. Montana State's first-round match against Wyoming on Monday will open with tee times set between 11:45 a.m. and 12:03 p.m. MT. The winning team will face off against the winner of that morning's match between Washington State and Weber State in the semifinals on Tuesday while each match's losing team will compete against each other in the consolation bracket on Tuesday.
"We're excited to kick off our spring season back at the Classic Club, which we are familiar with, and in a match play format," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "The preparation inside our facility has been strong – the ladies have been working hard to get ready. While not being able to see ball flights outside isn't ideal, the extra emphasis on short-game work inside has been key. Match play is a great way to start the season. It allows players to compete freely without worrying about the total score; they need to win the hole and move on. It's a fun, competitive format that gives them a good feel for where their games are coming out of winter. Going head-to-head with other teams brings out the grit in our players, and we have a great group that's ready to build on the momentum we gained in the fall. It's GO TIME."
Montana State will join a group of eight teams from around the west in Palm Desert to open the spring. On Montana State's side of the bracket, the Bobcats will face Wyoming on Monday and either Washington State or Weber State on Tuesday. The other side of the bracket features first-round matchups between Boise State and Utah Valley as well as Gonzaga and Nevada as each of the eight teams look to emerge as champions come Wednesday.
The Bobcats are coming off a strong fall season that featured their first team win since 2002 at the Yellowstone Intercollegiate in Bozeman, as well as individual victories for Eva Heinz (Yellowstone Intercollegiate) and Lauren Greeny (Diane Thomason Invitational). The Cats posted top-four finishes in four of their five team tournaments in the fall and carded three of their six lowest team rounds in program history at the Yellowstone Intercollegiate.
Seven Montana State golfers – Lauren Greeny, Sailor Graham, Eva Heinz, Maddie Montoya, Ashleigh Wilson, Norah Seidl, and Lauren Nau – traveled to Palm Desert to compete in the spring opener for the Bobcats.
Montana State is competing in Mountain Classic Match Play for the fifth-straight year. Heinz, Greeny, and Montoya have each competed in previous iterations of the tournament while the remaining Bobcats will take the course for Mountain Classic Match Play for the first time.
Montana State is set to face off against Wyoming in the first round on Monday with tee times set for every nine minutes between 11:45 a.m. and 12:03 p.m. Live scoring will be available at smartgolf.online.
