Cats drop 5-2 decision to Pilots at Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center
PORTLAND, Ore. – Lola Bean earned a 7-5, 7-5 sweep over Portland's Lexie Flores at No. 5 singles, and the Bobcats won a pair of doubles matches in Montana State's 5-2 loss to the Pilots in Portland on Tuesday.
The Bobcats fell to 4-9 on the season in the non-conference loss while Portland moved to 5-5. Montana State is 1-1 on its current road trip, previously earning a strong 5-2 victory over Portland State on Sunday, and is set to face Seattle U on Thursday to wrap up its three-game road stint.
"Portland played a great match today," Montana State head coach Hailey Barrett said. "Angel and Nia played a solid doubles match, and then Lola and Kavya were clutch again in another tight match. We battled through singles but just didn't quite have enough today. I'm proud of Lola for fighting through and winning another gritty match. We'll look to finish the trip strong against Seattle."
The Bobcats earned doubles wins on courts two and three to clinch the doubles point to start off the match. After Portland took the opening match on court one, Angel Bean and Nia Gelashvili defeated Flores and Dariya Radulova, 6-3, at No. 2 doubles to leave the two teams tied at one match win apiece in doubles. Lola Bean and Kavya Khirwar battled through a tiebreaker to win, 7-6 (5), on court three to secure the doubles point for the Bobcats.
The Cats dropped each of their first four singles matches as Portland clinched the match on its home court. Lola Bean highlighted Montana State's day in singles with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Flores on court five, marking her second singles win in as many matches. Gelashvili battled to three sets with Radulova on court two, bouncing back from a 6-1 loss in set one to take the second set, 7-5. Radulova then closed the match with a 6-0 victory in set three to clinch the point for the Pilots. Portland also earned wins on courts one, three, four, and six.
Montana State wraps up its road trip against Seattle U at 10 a.m. MT on Thursday at the Amy Yee Indoor Tennis Center in Seattle, Wash. The Bobcats will then return home to face New Mexico State in their non-conference finale on March 29 at 10 a.m.
