Cats post second-lowest team score, best par-71 team score in program history as Ashleigh Wilson leads team with fourth-place individual finish
LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. --- The Montana State women's golf team concluded the Bell Bank Pay It Forward Collegiate in third place, posting a 54-hole team score of 14-under 838 to finish with the lowest par-71 team score and second-lowest overall team score in program history on Tuesday.
The Bobcats posted a third-round score of 289 on the final day of competition to secure their fifth top-three result of the season. Four Bobcats concluded the tournament with par-or-better scores for the second time this season as Ashleigh Wilson (4th – 207), Norah Seidl (T-12th – 210), Lauren Greeny (T-15th – 212), and Eva Heinz (T-19th – 213) all finished in the top 20 at the Wigwam Golf Club Blue Course in Litchfield Park, Ariz. Wilson's 54-hole score matched the third-lowest individual score in program history.
"We obviously didn't play as well today, but any time we can put ourselves into the final pairing and shoot under par as a team for 54 holes is a good tournament," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "We've got a few things we need to keep working on before we head back to Arizona for the Bobcat Desert Classic. We had a lot of red numbers, and that is huge. They battled for 54 holes. Shooting under par as a team, or individually, is a good sign of the strength of our team and just how good we can be when our good days are good. Ashleigh had an outstanding tournament, Norah finished well, and [Lauren] Greeny finished in red numbers as well – I'm so proud of them. We kept battling, and we're excited to have a couple days to rest, get them back in the classroom, and then get ready to hit it hard back in our practice facility, possibly get outside, and be ready to battle for the Bobcat Classic and the Big Sky Conference Championship."
The Bobcats counted a 70 from Greeny, a 72 by Seidl, a 73 by Heinz, and a 74 from Wilson in the third and final round of the Bell Bank Pay It Forward Collegiate. Greeny led the Bobcats with five birdies on the day and went bogey-free on six of her final seven holes to wrap up the tournament. Seidl birdied on holes 3, 5, and 13 and strung together six-straight bogey-free holes on Nos. 8 through 13. After a string of bogeys on the front nine, Heinz shot par or better on each of her final seven holes, highlighted by birdies on Nos. 14, 17, and 18. Wilson carded birdies on holes 3 and 14, with her best stretch of play coming between Nos. 7 and 15 as she sunk eight pars and a birdie. Maddie Montoya shot a 78 in her final round and completed the tournament tied for 58th with a score of 226.
Individually, Lauren Nau and Sailor Graham posted rounds of 77 and 78, respectively, on Tuesday as Graham finished in a tie for 54th (225) and Nau concluded the tournament with a share of 70th place (230).
South Florida posted a 54-hole score of 26-under 826 to win the team title while Florida Gulf Coast (16-under 836) finished just two strokes ahead of Montana State (14-under 838) for second place. North Dakota State finished fourth with a 10-under 842, and Minnesota rounded out the top five at 4-over 856.
South Florida's Regina Plascencia earned medalist honors with a score of 9-under 204, North Dakota State's Madison Hicks finished one stroke behind with a 205, and South Florida's Tiphani Knight took third with a 206. Wilson placed fourth with her score of 6-under 207, and South Florida's Seunghyun Kim and Cherry Marley tied for fifth with a 208.
Montana State will have two weeks off before wrapping up the regular season by hosting the Bobcat Desert Classic from April 13-16. The tournament will take place at the Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear, Ariz.
