Montana State looks for second straight win in Idaho
BOZEMAN, Mont. (March 27, 2026) – One week after its first road win in two years, the Bobcat men's tennis team heads to Pocatello this weekend looking to stay hot.
Montana State faces an Idaho State squad that stands 6-7 on the season, 1-2 in the Big Sky. The Bobcats beat ISU 4-3 in Bozeman on Feb. 1. But Saturday's 11 am match features an important wrinkle.
"They're very good at home," said MSU coach Mateus Ceolin, and the math backs him up. The Bengals own a 3-0 home mark, including a league win over Portland State. The Vikings beat MSU in Portland earlier this season.
Idaho State also owns impressive wins over Montana, picked to finish second in the Big Sky, and nationally-ranked Gonzaga. Valentino De Pellegrin leads the Bengals from the top ladder position, with a 7-4 record at No. 1 singles. Sep de Visser is 5-0 at No. 2 singles.
"They have excellent talent on the top spots of the lineup and they compete extremely well at the bottom," Ceolin said. "We will have our hands full and will need to be our best versions to come out of Pocatello with the win."
After a handful of mid-season lineup shifts, Montana State has gelled. Yassin Elaroussy's emergence at No. 1 singles helped team captain Andre Stewart find traction at the second ladder position. He earned a straight-set win at Idaho last week, while Oumar Diallo triumphed at No. 3. That allowed recent lineup entries, Eddie Biss at No. 5 and Max Calaquian at the bottom spot, to clinch the victory.
Idaho State is 1-2 in league play this season – the Bengals lost to Idaho and Northern Arizona, in addition to beating PSU – while the Bobcats stand 1-1 in the conference, 5-9 overall. MSU dropped a road match to Portland State, in addition to beating Idaho in Moscow.
