Montana State two strokes back of the lead after 18 holes of competition
LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. --- Norah Seidl, Eva Heinz, and Lauren Greeny all finished the opening day of the Big Sky Women's Golf Championship in the top 10 as Montana State completed the tournament's opening round tied for second place.
Seidl led the Cats with a 3-under 68 on the par-71 course on Monday and is tied for second place after one round. Heinz shot a 1-under 70 and is tied for sixth, while Greeny posted an even-par 71 to conclude day one tied for 10th. The team finished the day at even-par 284 and just two strokes back of Northern Arizona for the lead.
"It was a pretty decent first round," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "Norah played well. We had some really good looks at birdies and missed a couple putts and left a few shots out there, but for the first round we will take it. Even par set us up for an opportunity tomorrow to be in the final pairing, and that's all we can ask for so, we're going to go out, have a game plan, stick to our game plan, and go see what it brings us. We're going to keep being gritty. We had a couple missed putts, but we gave ourselves some very good opportunities. Norah had a very nice round, Eva had it going, and Greeny's eagle gave us some momentum towards the end. We need to keep our grittiness and keep fighting."
The Cats counted Seidl's 68, Heinz's 70, Greeny's 71, and a 75 from Maddie Montoya to open the tournament on Monday, while Ashleigh Wilson carded a 76 to round out the Bobcats' lineup. Seidl shot a bogey-free front nine to start the day, with her lone bogey of the round coming on hole 11. She birdied on holes 1 and 7 while sinking an eagle on 5 in a strong round to start the tournament. Heinz posted four birdies on the day on holes 1, 3, 16, and 17 while shooting par or better on 16 of 18 holes. She posted bogey-free strings on the first six and last six holes across her 1-under round. Greeny birdied on holes 1 and 5, also sinking the Bobcats' second eagle of the day on hole 14. Montoya posted a birdie on 8 while sinking six-straight pars to end her round. Wilson carded a birdie on hole 5, with her best stretch of play coming during a five-hole bogey-free stretch on Nos. 3 through 7.
The Cats trail Northern Arizona for the tournament lead by just two strokes, with the Lumberjacks finishing the day 2-under 282. Montana State and Northern Colorado are tied for second thanks to rounds of 284, while Sacramento State and Idaho State round out the top five with scores of 289 and 290, respectively.
The top of the individual leaderboard features competitors from five different teams in the top five heading into Tuesday's second round. Sacramento State's Sophia Lee leads the individual field by one stroke at 4-under 67 after one round of competition. Seidl and Northern Arizona's Nina Lukyanenko are tied for second place at 3-under 68, and Idaho State's Andrea Chin and Northern Colorado's Samantha Colombine sit at 2-under 69 to round out the top five competitors in Arizona.
