Play suspended midway through round two due to lightning; Heinz leads Bobcats individually in tie for fifth
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The Montana State women's golf team completed its first day of competition at the Branch Law Firm/McGuire Invitational to open the 2026-27 season on Monday, finishing the day in fourth place after one and a half rounds of competition.
The Bobcats carded an even-par 288 in the first round of the New Mexico-hosted tournament, marking Montana State's best-ever team round on the UNM Championship Course, and completed 14 holes in the second round at 8-over par before play was suspended due to lightning. Senior Eva Heinz leads the Bobcats on the individual leaderboard in fifth place at 2-under par, while sophomore Ashleigh Wilson also sits in the top 20 in a tie for 15th place (+1). Montana State will conclude the second round tomorrow morning before playing the third and final round in Albuquerque.
"The first round was a great team effort," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "We came out full throttle, took a little dip, and then finished the round even-par, which is great for this good course. We had 18 birdies in round one, which is darn good. Eva was on fire – 69 on this course is very good. Lauren and Ashleigh played well too.
"We have some work to do this second round to finish it up in the morning and be ready to go for round three. We need to stick to our game plan and not divert. This course will punish the one who doesn't think. You need to have a plan. Nadia is playing really well in round two. It's exciting to see her shoot well in her first Division I tournament."
The Bobcats concluded their opening round in fourth place at even-par 288, marking their lowest-ever round on the UNM Championship Course. Heinz led the way with a 3-under 69 to finish the first round tied for third, posting a team-high six birdies along with an impressive string of nine-straight bogey-free holes between holes 13 and 1. Sophomore Lauren Nau also counted a par-or-better round with her even-par 72, opening her day with 10-straight bogey-free holes and finishing the first round with two birdies and just two bogeys. Montana State counted a 73 from Wilson, who concluded the round with 10-straight bogey-free holes, and a 74 from sophomore Sailor Graham, whose best string of play involved a stretch of two birdies and six pars between holes 4 and 11. The Bobcats' first-round score of 288 marked their lowest-ever round at the UNM Championship Course, surpassing their final-round total of 292 at the 2025 Branch Law Firm/McGuire Invitational.
The Bobcats completed 14 holes in the second round before play was suspended just before 5 p.m. due to lightning. Heinz leads the Cats in a tie for fifth place a 2-under par, while Wilson is tied for 15th at +1. Nadia Sanz Ouezzani, who is competing individually, is 4-over par and tied for 28th place with three holes to play in round two. The junior currently holds the Bobcats' best round-two score at 3-under par and has shot par or better on 14 of 15 holes so far. Graham, who also has three holes remaining in the round, and Nau are tied for 40th at +6, and senior Norah Seidl is tied for 72nd at +14.
Montana State is nine strokes back of No. 13 Pepperdine and UNLV (-7) for a share of the team lead. Tournament host New Mexico is in third place at 6-under par, with the Bobcats (+8) and UTEP (+9) rounding out the top five after day one of competition.
Pepperdine's Kylee Choi (-8) holds a two-stroke lead over New Mexico's Ava Cepeda (-6) on top of the individual leaderboard. UNLV's Kuree Little and Pin His Chen are tied for third at 3-under par, and Heinz shares fifth place at 2-under par with New Mexico's Ausanee Udkamtiang, UTEP's Luciana Origel, and UC Irvine's Zoe Sprecher.
Montana State remains paired with Nevada and Northern Arizona on Tuesday and will resume the second round from holes 1 through 3 in a 7:30 a.m. MT shotgun start.
