Wildcats Strong Down Stretch in 75-62 Win
Weber State scored on 14 of its last 17 possessions to pull away from Montana State for a 75-62 win in Ogden on New Year's Eve.
Kyle Bullinger scored 11 second-half points for Weber State to finish with a game-high 20 points. Marquis Navarre led the Bobcats with 14 points, while Danny Piepoli and Bobby Howard scored 13 each.
The teams played on even terms for the first 20 minutes, and MSU took a lead when Will Bynum dunked on the first possession of the second half. That was the only Bobcat field goal for nine minutes, and while Weber State added only 10 points during that time the Wildcats took control of the game by dominating the paint.
Led by Bullinger's attacking offense and Steve Panos' physical play inside, Weber State outscored MSU 14-8 in the paint in the second half. Weber State also turned a 16-to-11 halftime rebounding defecit at halftime into a 43-to-32 advantage.
"I thought we were up for that," MSU coach Brad Huse said of the physical nature of the game, "but they were already in the bonus at the 16-minute mark. That takes some of your aggressiveness away, and it's not a complaint about the officiating becase a lot of it was (MSU) reaching, being out of position."
Weber State raised its record to 8-6 on the season but a league-leading 2-0 in Big Sky play. MSU falls to 7-6 overall, 2-1 in the league. The Bobcats play at Idaho State Sunday afternoon at 2 pm in a game televised by Altitude Sports and Entertainment.
