MSU leads wire-to-wire in earning road victory
Montana State drained all six of its free throws in the last 30 seconds to cap a 53% shooting night and post a wire-to-wire 73-69 Big Sky road win at Idaho State on Thursday night.
Sophomore guard Shawn Reid led all scorers with 23 points, including 5-for-7 from three-point range, to pace the Bobcats. Christian Moon, who was 4-for-4 from the free throw line in crunch time, scored 18, while Rod Singleton added 14. MSU shot 53% from the field, converted 10-of-16 from beyond the arc, and nailed 15-of-19 free throws in the team's best overall shooting performance of the season.
After hitting its first nine shots against Portland State, MSU made its first two field goals and free throws Thursday at Holt Arena. The Bobcats used the early hot shooting to jump out to a 15 point lead in the game's first eight minutes. Reid keyed that run with a three-pointer, mid-range jumper and a layup to make the score 22-7 at the 12:08 mark. MSU led by as many as 17 in the first half, and took a 37-29 lead into the intermission.
Idaho State trimmed the lead to four points early in the second half, but back-to-back three-pointers by Reid and Moon near the 10-minute mark pushed the lead back to double-digits. ISU slowly whittled the lead down to four points, and MSU's lead was three at 19 seconds after Kenny McGowen nailed three free throws. But Moon and Reid each hit a couple of charity tosses to seal the win.
The Bobcats held ISU to 40.4% shooting, including just 8-for-26 from three-point range and 19-for-29 from the line. The Bengals kept the game within reach by out-rebounding MSU 33-to-29 and forcing 18 Bobcat turnovers while giving the ball away just 14 times. Montana State never trailed in the game.
MSU raises its record to 7-7 overall and 2-1 in Big Sky play, while the Bengals fall to 3-1 and 1-2. MSU's next outing is Thursday at Big Sky preseason favorite Weber State.
