MSU shoots just 38% in loss to Montana
Montana held the Bobcats to 37.7% shooting and buried MSU under a late three-point barrage, as the Grizzlies earned a 67-58 win in Bozeman on Saturday.
Derek Selvig, sidelined for UM much of the second half with four fouls, hit back-to-back three pointers with just under five minutes left to push his team's lead from three to seven, and the Bobcats never got to within a single possession again. Kareem Jamar scored 21 points to lead all players, 15 in the second half while Grizzly point guard Will Cherry was saddled with foul trouble.
“We had them in some foul trouble in general,” said MSU coach Brad Huse. “Derek had four fouls, and Cherry. We did make a run at them, but they did a good job holding us off.”
Montana built a double-digit lead halfway through the first half, and carried a nine-point cushion into halftime. The Bobcats climbed back into the game early in the second half, trimming the margin to three two minutes in. Kareem Jamar got the Grizzlies on the board three-and-a-half minutes into the half, and UM soon built the lead back to double-digits.
Montana scored on a Jamar layup to grab a 13-point lead with 12:37 to play, but Montana State held the Grizzlies scoreless for nearly six minutes. In that time MSU cut the lead to 56-53, but Selvig hit his three-pointers and the Bobcats could get no closer.
With the win, Montana raises its record to 16-6 overall, 9-1 in the Big Sky. The Bobcats fall to 11-11, 6-5 in the league.
