The Montana State volleyball team will take to the Big Sky Conference road once again as it travels to Eastern Washington and Big Sky Conference newcomer Idaho this weekend.
BACK ON THE ROAD:
The Montana State volleyball team will take to the Big Sky Conference road once again as it travels to Eastern Washington and Big Sky Conference newcomer Idaho this weekend. The Bobcats will open weekend play at EWU in Cheney, Thursday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. (MST) on Reese Court. MSU will face an old familiar friend on Friday as it moves south to face Idaho in Moscow, Friday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. (MST) in Memorial Gym. The Vandals, who left the conference following 1995-96 campaign, rejoined the Big Sky this season.
'CAT CHAT:
The Bobcats snapped its seven-match losing streak with a hard-fought 27-25, 25-22, 26-24 win at Southern Utah, last Thursday night. MSU hit a season-high .276 from the field, while also holding advantages in kills, assists and digs. Kennadie Clute guided the Bobcats with 17 kills, while Jolie Meade, Natalee Godfrey and Eli Svisco each added nine kills. Sophomore setter Katie Harrington dished out 43 assists, while senior libero Kasey Schlatter led all players with 17 digs. On Saturday night, Montana State dropped a 26-24, 25-19, 25-13 decision at Northern Arizona. MSU was paced by Godfrey with 13 kills and a .500 attack mark.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES & VANDALS:
Eastern Washington (6-13, 2-4) The Eagles split a pair of road conference contests last week, besting Sacramento State in five sets before falling to Dam Cup rival Portland State in three sets. Eastern has shown a flair for the dramatic this season, with five of its six wins coming in five sets. The Eagles are 5-2 in five-set matches so far this year. Eastern Washington has been led this season by Kelsey Julian and Allie Schumacher, who average 2.97 and 2.65 kills per set, respectively. Idaho (8-10, 4-2) will face Montana on Thursday night, before hosting the Vandals. UI split a pair of road matches last week, dropping a 3-2 decision at Portland State, before sweeping Sacramento State 3-0 on Saturday. Idaho has a well-rounded offensive attack as five players average around 2.00 kills per game or better.
BITS AND PIECES:
True-freshman Jolie Meade has been a nice surprise for the Bobcats this season. The native of Rocklin, California is tops on the Bobcat squad hitting .348 from the field. The mark also ranks 86th in the nation and is the 11th best attack mark in the nation by a first-year player...In Big Sky Conference action, sophomore Kennadie Clute is ranked fifth in the league, averaging 3.47 kills per set...Natalee Godfrey ranks second in Big Sky hitting percentage at .408, while Meade is listed seventh at .348...setter Katie Harrington is fifth in the league averaging 10.75 assists per set...libero Kasey Schlatter is third in the Big Sky at 4.60 dpg.
NOTICING NATALEE:
Junior middle blocker Natalee Godfrey has bounced back nicely from an early season injury to post an outstanding October, to date. In fact, Godfrey has only committed one hitting error in her last 46 swings. For the month, the Eugene, Oregon product is averaging 2.83 kills per set, while hitting a whopping .469 from the field. Godfrey had a season-high 13 kills against Northern Arizona on Saturday night.
ELI-CTRIFYING:
Junior outside hitter Eli Svisco has averaged 2.59 kills per set, over the last five outings.
DIGGING IT:
Kasey Schlatter is currently first on the team averaging 4.00 digs per contest. The Canby, Oregon native has totaled 252 saves this fall, including being in double-digit digs in 14 of MSU's 18 matches. Schlatter posted a career-high 36 saves against Canisius on Sept. 5. That mark was two shy of the all-time Bobcat record of 38 held by Kandice Kelly and Meghan Albiston. For her career, Schlatter has logged 916 digs, which is tenth on the all-time Montana State digs list.
