“It was a solid road effort,” MSU Head Coach Tricia Binford said
The Montana State women's basketball team closed out its season-opening road trip with a 63-47 win over Cal State Fullerton, Sunday afternoon in southern California.
Junior Jasmine Hommes paced MSU with 24 points, connecting on 10-16 from the field. The Lynden, Washington product had 16 points on seven field goals in the first half, matching Fullerton's total team mark for field goals.
Cal State Fullerton (0-1) jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, but Montana State (1-1) rattled off a 12-0 run sparked by seven points from Hommes and never looked back. The Bobcats held a 30-21 advantage at intermission.
MSU opened the second period with an 11-4 run and built its largest margin of the contest at 56-35 on an Alexa Dawkins jumper off the glass with six-minutes remaining.
"It was a solid road effort," MSU Head Coach Tricia Binford said. "We had a long day of travel on Saturday, but we overcame that with some terrific execution. We were much more consistent with our performance than what we were at Boise State. We shared the ball well and knocked down some open and contested shots."
Dawkins also finished in double-figures for the Bobcats with 12 points, converting five-of-eight from the floor. Junior Lindsay Stockton added seven points, while Kalli Durham paced MSU under the glass with a team-high six rebounds.
For the game, the Bobcats shot 44 percent from the field and 73 percent from the line. In addition, MSU connected on seven three-pointers. Montana State also held a 37-32 edge in rebounding and committed 13 turnovers to the Titans 17 miscues.
"Our defense was much improved," Binford said. "It was our first game winning the boards."
The Titans were paced by Chante Miles with 12 points and six assists.
Montana State will host Gonzaga on Friday night in Worthington Arena.
