Any concern Montana State head coach Tricia Binford had of taking a step backwards after a nine-day layoff for finals was wiped away midway through the opening quarter as the Bobcats got out to a 10-2 advantage.
Any concern Montana State head coach Tricia Binford had of taking a step backwards after a nine-day layoff for finals was wiped away midway through the opening quarter as the Bobcats got out to a 10-2 advantage. MSU built the margin to 13 points at the end of the stanza and cruised to a 74-36 win over Montana Western, Tuesday night in Worthington Arena.
"After nine days off I knew we would miss some chippies as we shook off some rust," Binford said. "I'm proud of the way we came out and shared the ball. We came out a little flat after halftime and missed some opportunities. I feel we learned from this game and got to take a look at some things that you don't get the chance to in tighter games."
Montana State (6-3) led 44-19 at halftime behind Jasmine Hommes' 11 points. MSU built its largest advantage at 73-31 on a Hannah Caudill jumper with 4:08 remaining.
As a team, the Bobcats hit at a 43 percent clip from the field, while limiting UM Western to 24 percent, and forcing 28 Bulldog turnovers.
The Bobcats were led in scoring by junior Peyton Ferris, who came off the bench for a game-high 16 points on seven-of-ten shooting. Also in double-digits were Hommes 15 and Riley Nordgaard 12.
Ferris paced MSU under the glass as well, hauling down six rebounds, while Hommes, Alexa Dawkins and Annika Lai each added five.
The Bobcats set a new school record with 12 blocks in the contest. The old mark of 11 was set against Valparaiso in December 2013.
UMW was led in the loss by Aniese Palmore with 14 points, including three 3-pointers.
MSU will play at the University of Wyoming on Saturday evening.
