12/21/2015 10:20:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Montana State (7-4) held Carroll College to just three points and 15 percent shooting in the opening period and the Bobcats cruised to a 74-34 win over the Saints in its final tune-up before Big Sky Conference play begins, Monday night in front of 1,352 fans in Worthington Arena.
The shots weren't falling for the Bobcats in the first quarter, but that didn't concern Montana State head coach Tricia Binford, who was locked in on the MSU defense.

"Heading into Big Sky play next week we really wanted to get after, and fine-tune, the defensive end," Binford said. "We haven't been finishing strong at the end of quarters and that is something we need to get stronger at, especially locking down on the defensive end in the final two minutes."
And, as the MSU defense stymied the Carroll College offense, the shots started to fall for the Bobcats as Montana State scored eleven unanswered points in the second quarter to take a 31-11 lead at intermission.
"Our halftime talk was all about defense," Binford said. "We used only defensive phrases and terminology. We had a long travel day coming back from Laramie and we were a little fatigued, but I thought our defensive effort gave us a spark offensively."
For the second consecutive game, Montana State post player Jasmine Hommes erupted in the second half. The Lynden, Washington native finished with a game-high 18 points, fifteen of which came after halftime. Hommes hit eight-of-14 from the field, including a three-pointer.
Also in double-figure scoring for MSU were Riley Nordgaard and Lindsay Stockton with 14 and ten points, respectively. All but one player in uniform scored for the Bobcats.
Montana State finished the contest shooting 42 percent from the field, including 50 percent in the second half. The Bobcat defense held the Saints to 24 percent shooting and forced 22 turnovers.
MSU held a 45-35 edge in rebounding. The Bobcats were led under the glass by Alexa Dawkins and Nordgaard with eight and six rebounds, respectively.
Carroll College was led by Sara Chalich with 12 points, all from beyond the three-point arc.
Montana State will host Southern Utah in the Big Sky Conference opener for both squads, Thursday, Dec. 31 at 2 p.m. in Worthington Arena.
