Bobcats Host T-Birds in Big Sky Opener

The 2015-16 edition of Bobcat women’s basketball will begin its Big Sky Conference season hosting Southern Utah and Northern Arizona this weekend in the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.
RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR:
The 2015-16 edition of Bobcat women's basketball will begin its Big Sky Conference season hosting Southern Utah and Northern Arizona this weekend in the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse. MSU will open its 2016 league slate hosting SUU, Thursday, Dec. 31 at 2 p.m. The Bobcats will conclude weekend play on Saturday, Jan. 2 when it hosts Big Sky foe Northern Arizona at 2 p.m.
THE SKINNY ON MSU AND BIG SKY CONFERENCE OPENERS:
Since the first Big Sky Conference season in 1989 the Montana State women's basketball team has posted a 13-14 mark in league openers. MSU has dropped its last four Big Sky opening games - with its last victory coming Jan. 6, 2011 as the Bobcats dismantled Sacramento State 106-55 in Worthington Arena. Head Coach Tricia Binford will also look to improve her 2-8 mark in Big Sky Conference openers when the Bobcats face Southern Utah, Saturday afternoon.
THE LAST TIME OUT:
Montana State held Carroll College to just three points and 15 percent shooting in the opening period as the Bobcats cruised to a 74-34 win over the Saints. Montana State scored eleven unanswered points in the second quarter to take a 31-11 lead at intermission. For the second consecutive game, Jasmine Hommes erupted in the second half. She finished with a game-high 18 points, fifteen of which came after halftime. Hommes hit eight-of-14 from the field, including a three-pointer. Also in double-figures were Riley Nordgaard and Lindsay Stockton with 14 and ten points, respectively. All but one player scored for the Bobcats. Montana State finished the contest shooting 42 percent from the field, including 50 percent in the second half. The Bobcat defense held the Saints to 24 percent shooting and forced 22 turnovers. MSU held a 45-35 edge in rebounding. The Bobcats were led under the glass by Alexa Dawkins and Nordgaard with eight and six rebounds, respectively.
BOBCAT PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Senior Jasmine Hommes was named Montana State's Player of the Week for her efforts against Wyoming and Carroll College. The Lynden, Washington product recorded a career-high 29 points against the Cowgirls, and followed it with an 18 point output against the Saints. For the two games, she averaged 23.5 ppg.
