Bobcats Set for Lady Griz and Brawl of the Wild

The 100th meeting between the Bobcats and Lady Griz will take place Saturday, Jan. 30 at 2 p.m., in Worthington Arena.
BRAWL OF THE WILD:
The 100th meeting between the Bobcats and Lady Griz will take place Saturday, Jan. 30 at 2 p.m., in Worthington Arena. Montana State enters the contest with a 14-5 overall mark and a 7-1 Big Sky Conference slate, while Montana is 11-8 overall and 4-4 in league play. The game will be televised live on FOX affiliates around the state with veteran announcer Chris Byers handling play-by-play duties and current Rocky Mountain College Athletic Director Bruce Parker adding color commentary. The men's game at 7 p.m., will be aired on ABC stations.
A CLOSER LOOK:
While the Bobcats enter Saturday's contest winning eight of its last nine games and sitting a 1/2 game back of Eastern Washington on top of the Big Sky Conference standings, don't be fooled by Montana's record. Only 1.4-seconds and an overtime period is all that separates the Lady Griz from a 7-1 Big Sky mark and a 4-4 league ledger. Last weekend, MSU split its road swing through the Palouse dropping an 81-69 decision at Eastern Washington, before rebounding with a 62-59 win Idaho. Montana dropped both games last weekend getting thumped at Idaho 78-61, before suffering a heartbreaking 67-65 loss with .9-seconds left at EWU.
MONTANA STATE PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Senior Jasmine Hommes was named Montana State's Player of the Week for her efforts against Eastern Washington and Idaho, last weekend. The Lynden, Wash., product averaged 17.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, while shooting 47 percent from the field in the two outings. Against Eastern Washington, Hommes recorded a team-high 19 points and six rebounds. She followed that performance with 16 points and six rebounds in MSU's win at Idaho.
THE LAST TIME OUT:
On Saturday, with 30-seconds left Peyton Ferris controlled an offensive rebound off a missed three-pointer by Hannah Caudill. Ferris missed her first layup attempt, but grabbed a second straight offensive board and put the ball back in the basket. Moments later with nine-seconds to go Lindsay Stockton made one-of-two free throws to secure a 62-59 win over Idaho in the Cowan Spectrum. Jasmine Hommes led the Cats with 16 points, while Stockton added 14 points.
THE SCOUTING REPORT:
Montana (11-8, 4-4) enters its tilt with Montana State on a three-game losing streak. The Lady Griz have been paced this season by Kayleigh Valley and McCalle Feller, who average 20.1 and 17.7 points, respectively. Valley is shooting 54 percent from the field this winter and is hitting at an 83 percent clip from the line. In addition, she is second on the team averaging 7.2 rebounds per contest. Feller is Montana's deep threat connecting on 54-of-139 three-point attempts. The duo average over 33.5 minutes per game. In Big Sky Conference play, Valley and Feller average a hefty 23.1 and 18.6 points, respectively. Alycia Sims, who has also played and started in all 19 games, guides the Lady Griz under the boards averaging 8.9 rebounds per game. She is also chipping in 7.7 points per contest. As a team, Montana is shooting 41 percent from the floor, 32 percent from beyond the arc, and 70 percent from the free throw line. In its 17-point loss to Idaho last Thursday, the Lady Griz were led by Valley with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Sims added nine points and ten rebounds. At Eastern Washington, Montana was paced by Valley with 19 points, Feller 16 and Sims with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
ALL IN THE FAMILY:
Jasmine Hommes became the 21st member of Montana State's prestigious 1,000-point club and the second Hommes to accomplish the milestone in the Blue and Gold. Hommes' Aunt Blythe Hommes-Hintz, recorded a career 1,265 points from 1993-97. Blythe Hommes is currently 12th on MSU's all-time list, after Jasmine Hommes passed her at Idaho on Saturday. Jasmine now sits 11th with 1,272 points. Blythe Hommes was the 1997 Big Sky Conference Most Valuable Player and is a member of the Montana State-Wendy's Athletic Hall of Fame. Another aunt, Brooke Hommes-Dunham (1992-96), was a four-time All-Big Sky Conference Academic pick for the 'Cats.

Montana State junior Peyton Ferris has picked up where she left of last season after being named the Big Sky Conference's Top Reserve. The Twin Bridges product is second on the squad averaging 13.9 points and is second in rebounding at 6.0 rebounds per game. Ferris is also shooting an impressive 60 percent from the field and 78 percent from the charity stripe.

Like her dad, NBA Hall of Famer John Stockton, Lindsay Stockton has done an outstanding job distributing and taking care of the basketball. Stockton is second on the team averaging 3.8 assists per game. The Spokane product also set a new career-high with six steals in MSU's opening win at Seattle U.

Transfer Riley Nordgaard, who sat out under NCAA rules last winter after coming to MSU from Augustana in South Dakota, has made an impact on the Bobcat squad. The Canby, Minnesota product is averaging 9.8 points and a team-best 6.7 rebounds per game. In addition, she has connected on 29-of-69 three-point attempts shooting 42 percent from beyond the arc. Nordgaard recorded 10 points connecting on four-of-12 attempts at Eastern Washington, including a two-of-six effort from long distance.
FATHER'S DAY:
Lindsay Stockton is the daughter of legendary NBA Hall of Famer and former Utah Jazz standout John Stockton, while Alexa Dawkins' father Dale played football on the University of Miami's 1987 National Championship team. Dawkins later went on to play wide receiver for the New York Jets from 1990-93.

Three Bobcat players are from Spokane, Washington - The Lilac City. Lindsay Stockton, Hannah Caudill and Delany Junkermier combined for 45 points, 12 rebounds, 13 assists and six 3-pointers against Eastern Washington and Idaho, last week. This winter, Caudill, a graduate of Gonzaga Prep, nailed the decisive 3-pointer with 6.7 seconds remaining at Sacramento State to give the Bobcats the win. She also posted her first double-double of her career dishing out ten assists at Sac State. Fellow Bullpup Lindsay Stockton averaged 13 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists, last weekend at Eastern Washington and Idaho. Junkermier, a Mead High School graduate, had her best performance of the weekend against Idaho with seven points, while adding two assists and a rebound.

The Bobcats established a new single-game school record against the University of Montana Western on Dec. 15 with 12 blocked shots, including a team-high three swats by senior Jasmine Hommes. The old mark - held three times - was set last against Valparaiso on Dec. 1, 2013.
