Montana State dropped the opening doubles point with narrow losses at Nos. 1 and 2 and Weber State grabbed the momentum and closed out the match 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the Big Sky Conference Tennis Tournament, Friday morning.
Montana State's No. 1 tandem of Laura Middel and Naomi Holopainen, who went 11-0 in league play, dropped their first match since March 12 in a 6-4 decision to Sara Parker and Kristi Elmer. MSU's Angelina Philippova and Shelby Cerkovnik squared doubles with a 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot. WSU claimed the first point of the match as Agata Bachanek and Devi Hasan downed Jessica Brycki and Wanda Holopainen 7-5.
"The doubles point was an important one for us today," said MSU head coach Jon Reeves. "It was within our grasp with a match point to win it, but it got away from us."
The Wildcats carried the momentum into singles where it won at Nos. 2, 5 and 6 in straight sets to secure the victory.
"Our girls fought for the singles, but Weber simply played better tennis (today)," Reeves said. "Laura, Jessica and Angie were in control and fighting through tight matches. Who knows where those three points end up?"
Montana State finished the season 8-15 overall and 6-5 in Big Sky play.
"This team has come so far in eight months," Reeves said. "Their tennis ability, knowledge, and overall fitness have dramatically improved from day one. Next year the team will hit the ground running because of our preparation from this year.
"The biggest thing is the team now knows what to expect from me, and they know what I expect from them," Reeves continued. "The intensity of our workouts will continue to increase, but so will the fun because this group has put in the work and dedicated themselves to creating a unified team. These young ladies have taken huge steps this year."
