Poor First Half Sinks Bobcat Women
12/3/2017 2:06:00 AM | Women's Basketball
“We’re disappointed with the possession battle,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “Nevada came out and threw the first punch and we didn’t respond well.”
Nevada held Montana State to a season low 14 points in the opening half and built a double-digit cushion the Bobcats were never able to chip away at en route to a 67-53 victory at the Oregon State-Maui Jim Classic in War Memorial Gym, Saturday evening.
The Bobcats had a hard time handling the ball in the first half giving up eleven turnovers that resulted in eight Wolf Pack points. MSU freshman Ashley Van Sickle's 3-pointer closed the gap to 10-9 at the 2:05 mark of the first quarter, but Nevada closed out the period on a 9-0 run and never looked back.
UN out-scored MSU 13-5 in the second quarter to take a commanding 32-14 advantage into intermission. Montana State shot 25 percent from the floor in the first half, including an icy 18 percent in the second stanza. The Wolf Pack out-rebounded the Bobcats 24-11 in the opening twenty-minutes.

Montana State (5-3) opened the third quarter on a 6-0 run and whittled the lead down to 44-32. MSU out-scored Nevada (4-4) 18-12 by virtue of hitting at a 53.8 percent clip from the field in the frame.
The Bobcat offense got on track in the second half and connected on seven-of-15 from 3-point range. Freshman Tori Martell led the Cats from beyond the arc with a three-of-three effort. Her nine points paced the MSU attack.
Also contributing for MSU were Delany Junkermier, Oliana Squires and Rebekah Hatchard with eight points, apiece.
The Bobcats turned the tables on the Wolf Pack in the final twenty-minutes, out-rebounding Nevada 20-15. MSU was led under the glass by Junkermier with seven boards.
"I loved our effort in the second half," Binford said. "We went with a difference offense that opened up some spacing. We took better care of the basketball and won the second half under the boards.
"We need to grow in our mistakes," Binford added. "We're still having these games were our turnovers pop up and we dig ourselves as hole where we are not ready to go. To move onto the next step, we need to be able to put four quarters together."
Nevada was led in the victory by Jade Redmon with 17 points.
MSU will play at the University of Hawaii on Monday night. The game is slated to tip at 10 p.m. (MT).
