Kelly Hooper completes best collegiate showings to lead the way as Battle at Works comes to a close Tuesday
ANACONDA, Mont. – Montana State sophomore Kelly Hooper completed a career-best showing to lead the Bobcats as play at the Battle at Old Works came to a close Tuesday, Sept. 12.
Hooper came into the day tied for eighth and by the end of the third round finished tied for third with a three-round score of 2-over-par 218. She shot an even-par 72 in the third round for the second-best score among all players during the final 18 holes. Hooper and MSU junior Clare Dittemore led the tournament field on Par 3s with a 2.92 scoring average.
"I think Kelly is going to set the pace for our team and I think she's going to be someone to be reckoned with," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "She's got a great game, I think she's found her groove and I think she gained some confidence. The course played hard and it didn't even faze her.
"I'm glad she's got off to a strong start. Next week, we go to a course that's very close to her home and she played well last year there. I'm happy for her and really happy with how she played."
The Bobcats finished seventh in the team standings with a three-round score of 910 (311-295-304).
Dittemore finished second in the MSU lineup and tied for 19th overall by firing a 10-over 226 over three rounds. Sophomore Delaney Elliott recorded a 3-over 75 Tuesday to finished tied for 28th overall (231). Sophomore Coral Schulz finished 34th with 235 strokes over three rounds and Lilly Navarre followed her at 238 and tied for 36th.
"I think the biggest thing is to find out who my top five are going to be (going forward)," Basye said. "We're playing with six, but what five are going to count towards our score. We need to build from where we're at.
"We played the second round well, but we need to do better. We've got some things we're rusty on, some confidence and course management issues, but I'm glad they fought back yesterday. We held our own a little bit today even though the course conditions got tough. When it gets tough, we need to figure out how to grind it out. We need to take it one shot at a time and not over think things and just go play our games."
North Dakota State won the team title by registering an 878 over three rounds. CSU Fullerton jumped from fourth to second from rounds two to three and finished at 887, fending off CSU Northridge (888) and Santa Clara (889).
Montana's Baylee Barckley shot 2-under (214) to earn individual medalist honors. NDSU's Natalie Roth placed runner-up at 1-under (215) while Hooper finished in a tie with Santa Clara's Chloe Wong and Fullerton's Pauline Welker.
