Montana State looks to build off its opening tournament of the season when the Bobcat golf team begins play at the Cougar Cup, hosted by Washington State, at Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman on Monday, Sept. 18.
The Bobcats travel to their second tournament of the 2017-18 season after hosting their opening meet – the Battle at Old Works in Anaconda, Mont. MSU heads to a tournament it played in a season ago and had success at. The Bobcats fired an 892 as a team over the course of three rounds and finished fifth overall, their second-highest showing of the year.
MSU joins host Washington State and seven opposing squads in a nine-team tournament field. Action at Palouse Ridge begins at 8:30 a.m. each day with 36 holes taking place Monday and the final 18 holes scheduled for Tuesday. Located on the WSU campus, Palouse Ridge plays at a par 71 and 6,307 yards, and was the site of the 2015 Pac-12 Men's Golf Championships.
"Palouse is a good track," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "Kelly played well there last year, Clare had a good showing, I think we played pretty well there last year. We were in the lead at one point overall. I'm very confident in them. Palouse is a difficult golf course, especially if the conditions are bad. But it's a golf course you can take advantage of some of the shots if you hit it in the fairway. You have to play smart and you have to play the bounces on this golf course."
Sophomore Kelly Hooper comes off a collegiate-best third-place showing at the Battle at Old Works after having her best previous success at the Cougar Cup. As a freshman, Hooper finished in a tie for 10th and recorded a personal-best 1-under-par 70 in the final round of the meet. This season, Hooper topped MSU's best individual performances by carding a 4-under 68 during the second round at the Battle at Old Works.
Jaylee Tait, Claire Dittemore and Coral Schulz all played at Palouse Ridge a year ago and will be making another appearance at the start of the week. Jaylee Tait finished tied for 18th, Dittemore tied for 21st and Schulz tied for 52nd for the 'Cats in Pullman last season.
"We have a game plan from last year that might change a little bit depending on the girls' games at this time, which we've started working on," Basye said. "I anticipate that we'll play well, but we'll have to have our short games going at Palouse."
Montana State is expected to field a lineup of Hooper, Dittemore, Delaney Elliott, Schulz and Tait. Lilly Navarre will round out the travel roster and play as an individual in the tournament. Fans can follow the Bobcats along during the meet with live scores posted during all three rounds on golfstatresults.com.
