ON A SERIES NOTE: Montana State and Omaha have just met once, that coming last fall as the Mavericks posted a 64-53 victory in Nebraska. Omaha out-scored the Bobcats in all four quarters as MSU shot 34.5 percent from the field, including an icy 14.8 (4-27) percent from beyond the arc. Montana State was led by Madeline Smith with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Omaha was paced by Amber Vidal and Claire Killian with 21 and 14 points, respectively.
STAT OF THE WEEK: In the last five games, MSU's two posts - Madeline Smith & Blaire Braxton - have combined to shoot 65.8% (25-38) from the field.
MORE ON THE MAVERICKS: Omaha enters Sunday's game 5-5 overall after dropping an 80-60 decision to Bradley in the Sapp Fieldhouse on Friday afternoon. The Mavs had three players in double-figure scoring led by Elena Pilakouta with 14 points and nine rebounds. Also hitting double-digits were Rayanna Carter 12, and Josie Filer 10. For the game, Omaha shot 41.1 percent from the field, but connected on just three-of-13 from beyond the arc. UNO out-rebounded Bradley 37-34, but turned the ball over twice as many times as the Braves (16-8). Omaha held a 15-12 lead after the opening quarter, but Bradley pulled away out-scoring the Mavs 26-13 in the second frame. On the season, UNO has been paced by Carter, who averages 10.2 points per game, while Pilakouta chips in 9.3 points and 5.9 rebounds per contest. The Mavs are paced under the glass by Filer, who pulls down 8.8 boards per contest. UNO is coached by Brittany Lange, who is her sixth season at the helm of the Maverick program.
LOOKING AT LUNDBERG: Transfer Claire Lundberg has already made an impact on the court for the Bobcat women's basketball program. The Anoka High School product is third in the Big Sky averaging 18.5 points per contest. In addition, she is second in field-goal percentage (54.0), total points (148) and field-goals made (54). She is fourth in the Big Sky in free throw percentage (86.7). Lundberg opened the season hitting her first 22 attempts from the charity stripe, just three shy to the record held by Rebecca Mercer. On the season, Lundberg has been in double-digit scoring in all eight games, including three games with 20 points or more. She posted a season-high 28 points in MSU's win over Delaware on Nov. 16. Lundberg was named the Big Sky Conference Player of the Week for Nov. 20 after averaging 27 points and six rebounds per game as MSU knocked-off Delaware and Texas State in WNIT action. For the two games, the native of Andover, Minn., shot 76.2 percent from the field, 83.3 percent from beyond the arc; and was 17-17 at the charity stripe. In addition, she registered three steals. Lundberg threw a perfect game against Texas State hitting eight-of-eight from the field, four-of-four from long distance and six-of-six from the free throw line.
KUDERER'S KUDOS: Junior Martha Kuderer, who also sat out last season after transferring from Seton Hall, averaged 8.5 points and five rebounds, as the Bocbats dropped a pair of games in the Lone Star state, last week. She had her best outing against Stephen F. Austin with eight points and nine rebounds. Kuderer had her best weekend of the season to date as MSU faced Delaware and Texas State in the WNIT. The 5-11 forward from Eden Prairie, Minn., averaged 19 points and 7.5 rebounds, while shooting 62.5 percent from the field against the Blue Hens and Bobcats. She had her best outing against Texas State with a season-high 21 points, connecting on 8-12 from the floor. In MSU's win over Delaware, Kuderer posted 17 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double as a Bobcat. On the season, she has been in double-digit scoring on three occasions.
HOLY MOLY, OLI: Oliana Squires is averaging 10.3 points per game through the first eight games of the season. The Colorado Springs, Colo., product notched a season-high 14 points at Marquette. Against the No. 19-ranked team in the nation, Squires nailed four 3-pointers. She has been in double-digit scoring in five of MSU's eight games. Squires is currently ranked tenth in the Big Sky Conference connecting for 1.9 3-point makes per contest. She dished out a season-high five assists in MSU's win over Long Beach State and pulled down a season-best five rebounds against the 49ers, as well.
TORI, TORI, TORI: Montana State sharp-shooter Tori Martell is still looking for a consistent stroke this season. The Somerset, Wis., native is 10-of-53 from long distance. Last season, Martell connected on 36 three-pointers, including 19 in the last eight games of the season. She is currently averaging 6.4 points per game. Martel was held scoreless at Stephen F. Austin last Thursday, before rebounding with five points at TCU in 19 minutes of action.
BARDS OF THE BLOCK: Juniors Madeline Smith and Blaire Braxton have manned the blocks for the Bobcats the past two seasons. The duo has swapped starting time at the five and each average 17.9 minutes or more per contest. Braxton, a product of Highlands Ranch, Colo., is first on the team hauling down 5.6 rebounds per game, while Smith, from Snohomish, Wash., is third averaging 5.1 per contest. Braxton's best outing of the season came against Long Beach State with a career-high 15 points going 5-5 from the field and 5-5 from the line. Smith registered ten points and 11 boards against Long Beach State for her first double-double of the season. Last weekend, the tandem combined for 19 points and 11 rebounds, while shooting 54 percent from the field. On the season, the twosome is shooting an impressive 63 percent from the floor.
THE WRIGHT STUFF: Freshman Halle Wright received her first start of the season against TCU last Saturday. The Aumsville, Ore., product posted four assists, three rebounds and two assists in her debut against the Horned Frogs. Wright missed the first three game of the season with a leg injury. She had her best outing of the season in MSU's win over Long Beach State with eight points, three boards and two assists.
FEET TO THE FIRE: Freshmen Gabby Mocchi has played in all eight games and is averaging 2.3 rebounds per game. She posted a season-best eight points at Wyoming on Nov. 27. Kamden Hilborn has played in seven games and has dished out eight assists, while adding seven steals. The Helena High grad recorded a season-high three steals against TCU last Saturday.
