Cats face difficult task in Superior California
BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State men's tennis coach Jared Burnham likes the way his teams has played in recent weeks. But he also knows that string of success faces a severe test this weekend.
"They're always tough, especially in Sacramento," Burnham says of perennial Big Sky power Sacramento State, who the Bobcats square off against on Sunday at 1 pm MT on the road. "They've played very well against some excellent teams, and we've played well lately. We've got to keep it going."
The Hornets stand 3-10 on the season against an extremely difficult schedule, but two of those wins came against Big Sky foes. The Hornets won at Northern Colorado and at home against Eastern Washington, and also own a victory against West Coast Conference foe Saint Mary's. Sac State hosts Montana on Friday.
Senior Adrian Torrico and freshman Joaquin Espinoza have spurred MSU's recent surge, which has seen the Cats win three of five, with both losses coming in narrow 4-3 decisions. Each player is among the Big Sky's top 10 in singles matches this season with 7-3 records, and the team of Torrico and Kasper Parlklo is 6-2 in doubles play, among the league's top five.
Sunday's match begins a stretch of three straight on the road for Montana State. The Cats pay at NAU on Saturday, April 7, and visit Southern Utah a day later. The Cats then close the regular season with four of five matches at home, starting with the now-rescheduled tilt against Idaho on Wednesday, April 11, at 10:30 am.
