The Montana State golf team plays in Hawai'i this week in its preparation for the Big Sky Championship
Montana State has the opportunity to play against some of the best competition in Division I women's golf starting on Tuesday in Kane'ohe, Hawai'i, as the Bobcats participate in the 35th annual Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational. MSU will play three rounds of golf from March 10-11 on the Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course on the island of O'ahu in a field of 16 teams.
"It's a totally new golf course for us," said MSU head coach Brittany Basye. "New grass, new weather with going to Hawai'i which is exciting for us. The golf course is nice, but it'll be tricky. It'll be a challenge because it's off the ocean so the wind will be a factor. We'll have to hit good shots off the Bermuda grass. The greens are really grainy so we'll have to get use to that, but we have a couple days of practice before we go play."
The tournament features the likes of Arizona State, Ohio State, San Diego State, TCU and others that contend among the best in the Division I ranks. The 16 teams will be competing on a course that runs 6,099 yards and plays at a par 72.
MSU's lineup will consist of Kelly Hooper, Delaney Elliott, Lucia Prieto Romano, Sofia Rodriguez Todd and Coral Schulz for the second consecutive meet. Those five played at the GCU Invitational and placed 13th in the tournament that ran from Feb. 22-23 in Phoenix.
"We've got the same lineup so I'm looking for some consistency," Basye said. "I'm giving these five another shot to go out to get some practice in and be able to play outside. I'm looking forward to seeing us have another opportunity to play in preparation for our conference tournament."
The Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational features 36 holes of competition on Tuesday followed by a third round of 18 holes Wednesday. Each day of action begins at 12 p.m. MDT and at 8 a.m. locally. Live results are available on golfstat.com with a link available on the golf team's schedule page on msubobcats.com.
