Cats Cruise Past Chadron State in Season Opener

The Bobcats recorded 26 steals, two shy of the all-time mark set against Montana Tech on Dec. 16, 2000. Issy Bunyan paced MSU with five steals, while Morales and Taylee Chirrick added four.
Montana State opened the game on a 17-0 run and never looked back en route to a 92-28 season opening victory over NCAA Division II Chadron State on Monday night in Worthington Arena.
Montana State (1-0) used a smothering defense to force 48 turnovers which parlayed into 47 points.
The Bobcats held a 22-6 lead after the first quarter and entered intermission with a 54-16 advantage. All twelve MSU players scored in the opening 20-minutes as 32 of its 54 points were scored off Eagles' miscues.
"We're a defensive team," said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. "That's our identity. With this team we knew we were going to be a little longer, a little faster, a little bit deeper. We want to play a few more possessions and we were able to do that.
"It's kind of hard to shut this group off," she added. "We recruited kids with motors and high attack-minded skills on the defensive end. I'm just really proud of their overall effort."
Senior transfer Esmeralda Morales paced the Bobcats with a game-high 16 points, connecting on seven-of-11 from the field. Also in double digits were Marah Dykstra and Addison Harris with 10 points, each. The Bobcat bench outscored the Eagles 49-7.
MSU finished the game shooting 42.1% from the field, while limiting Chadron State to 25% on the night. The Bobcats also held a 45-31 cushion under the boards led by Harris with six rebounds.
