Jeremiah Davis, Patrick McMahon lead Montana State with 17 points each
OGDEN, Utah – Jeremiah Davis tallied a career-high 17 points as five Bobcats scored in double figures, but Montana State came up just short at the Dee Events Center in Ogden, Utah, on Thursday night, falling to Weber State, 82-79, in overtime.
The two teams played a tightly matched contest that featured 13 ties and 19 lead changes, but it was ultimately the Wildcats who would come away with the victory after taking the lead for good on a three-point play with 1:39 remaining in overtime. The Bobcats fell to 15-12 (9-5 Big Sky) on the season while Weber State improved its record to 14-14 (8-7 Big Sky).
"Just one thing that was the difference, and unfortunately it's the one thing you can't help much from the sidelines on, and that's the offensive glass," head coach Matt Logie said. "We talked about it all week. Obviously, we're not in a place where we can just beat guys up in practice and do a bunch of physical, crazy rebounding drills, but we didn't match what we needed to match today. So when you give up 16 offensive rebounds and you only get six back on the other side, it's going to be really hard to win on the road. The fact that we even had a chance was because our defense was good, but when you give them third and fourth and fifth opportunities, it's really hard to win."
Both teams traded buckets throughout the opening 10 minutes of the contest, with neither team leading by more than three points during that stretch. Montana State trailed by two, 17-15, at the 10:11 mark before Patrick McMahon sunk a hook shot to spark a 12-2 run over the next four-and-a-half minutes to give the Cats their largest lead of the game, 27-19, with 5:40 left in the first half. Christian King tallied six of his 12 points on the night as part of that stretch as the Bobcats shot 5-of-6 from the floor during that run. Following that run, Weber State used a 9-2 run over the final 5:23 of the half to trim Montana State's lead to 29-28 at halftime. McMahon led the Bobcats with 10 points of 5-of-10 shooting in the frame while King and Jaden Steppe added six points apiece.
Weber State carried their run into the first bucket of the second half, capping off an 11-2 scoring stretch with a jumper to take a 30-29 lead just 26 seconds into the frame. The two teams played back and forth over the next eight minutes, with no team leading by more than two points until Weber State's Nigel Burris sunk a pair of free throws to put the Wildcats up, 44-40, at the 11:35 mark. Burris' three-pointer with 9:32 left in the second half gave Weber State its largest lead of the second half, 51-45, before King and Steppe made back-to-back layups to cut Montana State's deficit to two, 51-49, with 8:34 left in regulation. Weber State's lead fluctuated between two and four points until the 4:04 mark when Jed Miller went on a five-point run over a 31-second stretch to put the Bobcats back in front, 63-62, with 3:33 left in the second half. The game featured four more lead changes and two ties before the end of the period as Montana State and Weber State headed into overtime tied at 67 points apiece.
Montana State took the first lead of overtime on a pair of Howie Keene free throws before Weber State's Tijan Saine Jr. and the Bobcats' Jed Miller alternated buckets over the first two minutes of overtime. Miller's three-point shot with 2:51 remaining put the Bobcats up, 74-71, before the Wildcats used a 7-0 run to build a 78-74 advantage by the 1:20 mark. McMahon and King each made a free throw to trim that lead to 78-76 with 36 seconds remaining, but Saine knocked down two free throws of his own to keep the Bobcats just out of reach in the closing seconds. King drilled a clutch three with three seconds on the clock to help the Bobcats come back within one. Saine then buried a pair of free throws on the other end, and a full-court Bobcat inbound play to set up a chance to tie was unsuccessful as Weber State came away with the three-point win, 82-79.
Montana State shot an impressive 29-of-58 (50.0%) from the floor with 36 of their points coming in the paint as the Bobcats were limited to 7-of-24 (29.2%) from three. Weber State shot 32-of-71 (45.1%) from the floor while the Montana State defense limited the Wildcats to just 4-of-17 (23.5%) from deep. Weber State outrebounded the Bobcats, 42-33, overall and 16-6 on the offensive glass. The Bobcats were strong defensively, tallying six steals and five blocks in the contest.
Davis and McMahon tallied a team-high 17 points to lead the Bobcats, with the tally marking a career high for Davis. Davis shot 5-of-7 from the floor while McMahon tallied six rebounds. Miller scored 16 points and led the Bobcats in rebounds (8) and assists (5). Steppe matched his career high in scoring for the second-straight game, tallying 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting while adding four rebounds, one steal, and a team-high two blocks. King contributed 12 points, two rebounds, a team-high three steals, and one block.
